I came across this firmware update for canon cameras (point and click) which gives more features to the camera.

I cant test it out as I dont have one of the applicable cameras but it has very good reviews and looks pretty nifty, and it also doesnt actually flash the firmware, so if it goes wrong you can just remove the files from the media card and it will be back to normal.

I had a look to see if anyone else had posted this, but didnt find it, sorry if i missed it and this is duplicate info.

Someone sent me a link for that just a day or so ago. It's kinda scary though, don't you think? I've always been afraid of getting a virus in one of my cameras. However, it does look pretty cool and it appears to be safe. Maybe I should take one for the team and test it out on my SD950 IS?

I've seen that stuff before.
It looked very interesting, the firmware is thoroughly hacked to the point of there being a development kit and scripting language - really cool if you have a sacrificial camera !

Yeah. I'm not quite sure how I feel about sacrificing the SD950 IS. It's not your average point-and-shoot. Maybe I should buy something on eBay

"Now that you've installed CHDK, all that's left is to fire it up and try it out. As I said, CHDK is non-destructive to your current firmware, so if you just turn on your camera you won't notice anything different. You have to run CHDK each time you want to use it."

It wont actually overwrite the firmware, so it shouldnt have any negative effects on the camera, however i guess with all these "tweaks" there is the possibility it could go wrong somehow.

Yeah, I did a body scanner programming course, and lesson 1 was how not to break the hardware.
I would hope the CHDK developers have done that lesson too :)

At least they don't have to do lesson 2, how not to break the patient
