View Full Version : Softball with tight crop
Homer 05-05-2008, 07:09 AM Here are a few from a recent softball game I shot. Croped them tight and horizontal for something different.

BFiredup 05-05-2008, 07:50 AM Love them.....they fit in with the "Mommy Factor" for sure.....they should sell....quick..
Where we you standing with these, and were you using the 20-700 or the 300?
Crisp, clear and wonderful!
Jim, do you use a monopod with your 300mm? Also do you think you need two bodies if you have the 70-200 and 300mm lenses? Do you always use both lenses at a game? Sorry about all of the questions. I keep batting around getting one, but definitely have some issues with price and size of the lens. I'm also wondering if it's essential to have two bodies.
Old Timer 05-05-2008, 09:20 AM Very nice Jim. I like the crops and was especially taken by the variety of the head gears.

Thanks, I was using the 300 on these and standing just inside first base near the dugout.
BFiredup 05-05-2008, 09:30 AM That is where I get also, when I can...if the field is set up so you can....but I could tell you must have been using the 300.....do you use that for all of your baseball/softball shots...
And the questions Jeta asked too....LOL...

Thanks JETA, I shoot both ways but prefer to use the monopod. Usually the only time I don't use a monopod is when I forget it. My goal is to get a MK III, which I'll use as my primary camera with the 300 and use my MK IIn as a backup with the 70-200. Now that's my goal but don't see that happening soon. I love the 300 but find that I could use the 70-200 often but just don't want to keep changes lenes, especially during a baseball game. It's not essential to have two bodies but I'm sure it helps. During this game I wanted to get some pictures of the pitcher during her warmup but found that by the time I took out my lens and changed them she was pretty much finished. Having the second body would have helped in this situation. Now I did get some shots of her but it would have been easier for me to just grab a different camera to shoot what I wanted.

Right now I've been using my 300 for everything. I love the clarity that lens gives me, not that the 70-200 f/2.8L IS is any worse. I like being close and not having to crop much from a shot. It's a great lens for baseball / softball. I did find that it was rough to use during track, as I had to stay back and would have problems with people standing between me and the action, but I dealt with it.
It's a big and heavy lens and does cost a pretty penny, but if your shooting a varity of sports and not just for scrapbooking then I would highly recommend it. It's a great investment that will be there as you grow.

BFiredup 05-05-2008, 10:40 AM Okay...thanks for the info....something to look into in the future....right now I am all invested out...LOL...but always looking for ways to improve...and that would be a good thing, down the road....
Your shots are always excellent....
retroactiv 05-05-2008, 11:47 AM It's nice to see your work again, as usual great clear crisp shots I really do like the crop on them as it works very well for them.
Lori11 05-05-2008, 05:51 PM Wondeful shots!
Old Timer 05-06-2008, 05:33 AM I wish I had a 300 2.8 but that 4K has keep me away from it and will for a long time to come. However the addition of the 300 f4 this spring has changed how I'm shooting some of my sports as well. I love the 300 range and it seems to work very well for several areas on the baseball diamond. As for two bodies I rarely will shoot a game with out two bodies. It stems back to the days of all primes. Lately it's been the 300 on the D200 and the 80-200 on the D2h. It's proving to be a pretty reliable combination for covering the field.

Thanks for all of the great info Jim. I just took a deposit on my IIn today so it's as good as gone. Now I have to decide if the 300mm is something I really need. I'm such an amatuer and think it might be ridiculous for me to own a 300mm.....
