I found a D2X for 1000 thats in good shape . But I really want the D3 but have to wait until july/august. I have a D200 right now and have the 1000 to blow but was gong to get a new lens. If I buy the D2x I could sell the D200 or give it to one of my kids to learn on. How good it the D2X. decisions decisions decisions

If I was in your shoes, I'd totally pick up the D2x. That or the D300 will be my next camera when I can afford one.

If you do get it and decide you don't like it, I'm always accepting free handouts ;)

id wait and get the d300. the d200 is a very capable camera, and the d2x isn't really an upgrade, where as the d300 has several years of improvements, and would be new!

edit: although it would depend what features you actually need for your type of shooting.... ie live view, faster fps etc.

I want to get into sports pics. But I am either gong to get this or buy the sigma 70--200 2.8.

Are you looking to photograph indoor or outdoor sports?
If outdoor shooting will be your primary location, then I can see where maybe the D2X could help. But, if the majority of your shooting will be indoors, then the faster lens would be the way to go. The faster lens, along with the D200, should be good for most indoor, low-light situations you run into.

Actually, the D2x would be a horrible choice for indoor sports, Spjak. Its high ISO performance is worse than the D200 and while its AF system is more accurate, image quality would suffer.

The D200 is probably a better choice unless you really want the 8 frames per second high speed crop of the D2x. I would definitely suggest that racedraper consider saving up for a D300. They've already started popping up on the used market, and if you ask me it's the best bang for your buck camera ever made. It'll offer you the most versatility in speed and focus options for sports.

Exactly; regarding the D2X for indoor shooting.
That is why I said if he was shooting indoors then the faster 2.8-lens would be the way to go.
