I got to use some of our hard earned Income Tax Refund to buy a new lens. After much deliberation and research I chose the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens. I should have it by the end of the week. Any one who has this lens and would like to share their experience/advice and maybe even some pics would be appreciated. This is my first macro and major lens purchase.

I love that lens. It's great for macros, and just about anything else you want to shoot. Here are a few examples of images I have taken with my 100mm f/2.2 macro.

That lens is such a good value (I own one) that in my mind it isn't even a major purchase because the darn thing is just so useful.

Good choice.

I just got that macro lens about a month ago so not much of a chance to shoot too much.

Here are a few.

WOW,

Thanks, MJS, MB1 and Jeta. Great Pictures. I can't wait until this weekend to take some of my own.

Got the lens today. I had some film homework so I did not have much time to play, but I did get a chance to take a few pics.

I'm kind new on photography, whats diference between macro lens 60 mm,100 mm and 180mm? which of these its more better on picture quality??

I have only used the 100mm macro so I can't compare it to the others as far as image quality goes.

The biggest difference is the focal length, and the working distance you will have from your subject to get the 1:1 life size image. With the 60mm, you will have to get closer to your subject to get a life size image. With the longer focal length lenses, you don't have to be as close, and you will also be able to isolate your subject, and blur the background better than with the shorter focal length. Depending on your shooting style, that could be a good thing, or a bad thing.

The newest issue of Outdoor Photographer Magazine has an article that talks about the differences in the different focal length macro lenses. It also has a short right up from several pros, who talk about the macro lenses they like to use, and why. Worth picking up if you're thinking about getting a macro lens.

Congrats on the new lens! I'm sure you'll enjoy shooting with that lens. I look forward to seeing your results with that lens in the future

All three will provide magnification up to life-size (1:1). When used strictly as a macro lens, the only difference is the camera-to-subject distance (as mjs1973 mentioned). At any given magnification, changing this distance has two main effects: 1) it changes the perspective so that the spacial difference between the foreground and background appears different, and 2) it changes the angle of view so you can select exactly how much or how little of the background to use.

It's really a simple difference, but it is a very powerful principle once you learn how to control it.

I've use lenses from 17mm to 600mm to get macros/close-ups depending on the situation. My personal favorite for macros is the 300mm for my style of shooting.

Thanks Loupey, I am finding it to be an amazing lens. At close distances the DOF is very shallow even at F32 so it takes some getting use to. I looked at getting the 60mm instead of the 100 but decided on the 100 because I am hoping it will help me out at my Granddaughters Baton Recitals (Very Bad Gym Lighting). The 180 lens was just out of my price range.
