Hello all,
1st time post: I have a D80 with Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 lens. On Manual or any other settings -- I cannot get camera to settings lower than f6.3. At 50-70mm on the lens I can get F5.6 All seems good other than this. Nikkor lens (28-80mm f3.3-5.6) does fine. Is this a camera problem or the lens?

Any help is appreciated,

WSB

Did you buy the lens recently or is it an old lens you had previous the your D80? Sometimes the electronics in third-party lenses are incompatible with new SLR bodies. You should see if you can get the lens "rechipped," if that's the case.

If that isn't what's happening, then it may be broken. Let me just clarify one thing. When you say you can't get the aperture lower than f/6.3, is that only at the longest zoom or is it any focal length?

if your at focal length 18mm can you get lower (3.5?)?

at the longer focal lengths (not sure where it would start on that lense but def at 200mm 6.3 IS the lowest you can get. since you said at 50-70 you can get 5.6 it seems to me like this is your "problem"

if this is the case its normal thats what the lense was made to do. if not more info needed.

did not quite get what racedraper means... i also purchased a tamron 18-200 but i can't select low apertures in wide zoom. The tamron is a 3.5-6.3, so, i think i must be able to select the 3.5 aperture, donīt you think? What are we doing wrong? Were we really deceived? Comments please... I'm getting desperate...

your ap is 3.5 to 5.6 your best ap is at 18mm when your lens in closest to glass to glass, as you zoom out your ap becomes smaller when the glass goes farther away from each other then it becomes 5.6. So look at your lens , and notice that the tube get smaller as you extend out. this is why your lens is 3.5- 5.6 it cant not hold the ap.
