View Full Version : A spot on my camera!
AmberC 01-06-2008, 10:36 AM I have been having an issue with this black spot.. dust I guess? on my camera. At first, I thought it was on my lens, but it isn't because its there with both lenses and in the SAME spot.
Its in the camera body. I used one of those air things for computers and blown on the inside of my camera with that, to no avail. Is there any way I can get rid of this spot without taking the camera somewhere? (I dont have a lot of extra money to pay someone to clean it.)
Here is a picture with an example of "the spot" You cant always see it, only on a light background and its easy to get out in PS, but its still annoying.

Thanks!

WsW-WYATT-EARP 01-06-2008, 11:21 AM amber when you used the "air thing" hehehe - did you lock your mirror up so that you are able to use the air blower on the sensor ? usually with the mirror locked up you can see the spec of dust and able to blow it off...
btw - set your camera to f22 and take a pic of the blue sky - you will see all the dust then
AmberC 01-06-2008, 11:36 AM Are you laughing at me? lol Its ok.. I'd laugh too. I couldn't remember what that stuff was called.. It just came to me though! Dust off isn't it? lol
Umm.. No I didn't "lock" it up. I did use my finger to gently push it up though and blew it all thru there. I just cant seem to find it :( I guess I can try again. How can I "lock" it?
Amber
I hope that 'air thingy' isn't canned air...too powerful...use a rocket blower.
WsW-WYATT-EARP 01-06-2008, 12:19 PM yes as frog said - don't use canned air or any compressed air - the rocket blower is the most popular - (a bulb blower)
somewhere in your menu should be the option to lock up the mirror for cleaning - I don't know where it would be on the sony
WsW-WYATT-EARP 01-06-2008, 12:25 PM from what i have read - in your menus - set up menu (the wrench) page 3 - you have the option to clean ccd - select yes then you will need to push the shutter (without a lens attached) and the mirror will flip up and let you blow the dust off the sensor - be careful not to touch the sensor with the plastic tip of the blower. then if you turn off and on the power the mirror will flip back down

AmberC 01-06-2008, 12:44 PM Hmm.. well I think it was just dust off so its probably the one i'm not supposed to use :blush2:
Thank you for the tip! I'll look for the rocket blower stuff and see if that works.
Amber
WsW-WYATT-EARP 01-06-2008, 12:51 PM the rocket blower is just a bulb blower -
here is the link to one of the rocket blowers

like I said just a "bulb style blower"
AmberC 01-06-2008, 01:19 PM Oh .. :blush2: Ok lol Thanks so much!!!!!

SmartWombat 01-06-2008, 01:33 PM If all you did was lift up the mirror (without breaking the mechanism, well done) then you just blasted gas around the inside of the camera without moving the dust off the sensor.
You need to use the sensor cleaning mode which locks up the mirror and opens the shutter but switches off power to the sensor. That way it avoids any electrical charge on the sensor holding the dust, and presents the large amount of light reaching the sensor causing problems.
Make sure the battery is fully charged, you don't want the mirror dropping down while you've got the blower nozzle in the camera !

Thank you :) I will look at it tonight!

mn shutterbug 01-06-2008, 05:03 PM Why couldn't a person just use one of those bulb blowers/suckers, like we used to use in our babies nostrils, when they had a cold. It sucked the goo out of their noses pretty good.

Never used one of those on our kids but seems like a good idea.
I don't think they'd work for sensor cleaning as the rocket blower is designed so it does not suck the dust back in after blowing. Then it would just get blown out onto the sensor next time you squeeze.
I guess after you blow it loose, its supposed to fall out or something.

I honestly think you could. I've used those many a times on my kids and when I got my rocket blower I cracked up thinking it looked like a glorified snot sucker. :p
AmberC 01-07-2008, 02:59 AM Well I've got plenty of bulb syringes (snot suckers) so I supposed I could be the first to try it! lol
Amber
mn shutterbug 01-07-2008, 02:47 PM Amber, be sure to report back. I still have a "snot sucker" left over from my 35mm days. I used to use it to blow dust off the lens.
ShaneJennings 01-07-2008, 06:10 PM Just get the snot out of them first..... :D

LOL
Well.. I found the mode.. and I can SEE the stinking spot in there, but I cannot find my bulb syringes!!!!!!!!!! I tried blowing lightly on it, but thats not working. Its right there! Argh! How frustrating that is! lol
Well.. as soon as I can find my bulb syringes I will and do this I will update you guys.
Amber
Seriously, Amber, that might work, BUT, I'd be sure I squeezed the bulby thingy before getting it near the sensor, away from the camera.
Assuming you want to suck that dust spot out might work, but you don't want to blow any speck of dust that might be in the syringe onto the sensor.
