I am ready to purchase a hard drive video camera, ive pretty much settled on the sony dcr-sr82. The only thing i dont like is no firewire usage with it.. i think.
One of my questions is, say im on vacation, i fill up the 60 gigs of hard drive space and want to transfer it to a , lets say a 500 gig extenal hard drive, can this be done directly from camera to hard drive, or do i need a computer there to perform this.

also, is it that big of a deal, that i will have to use UBS2.0 on the camera to transport data?
anything else i should know about the sr-82.

Thanks
Mike

reading the specifications, my gut feeling is that you will need a pc with sony's software loaded to transfer the video. in the future there might be some portable hard drives with the right firmware to enable direct transfer but at the moment i am pretty sure there isn't

I've used hard drive units to record live from the camera, but not what you are looking for. Playback won't be a problem with the USB 2.0 since you are essentially coming off an external hard drive.
