View Full Version : another DIY Thread (camo cover)
livin4lax09 08-02-2007, 09:24 AM I'm in the same boat as Asylum Steve in the belief that there are many things in photography that if you pay full price for it you're a sucker, because you can make comparable products for much less. Now that I've started shooting more wildlife, and I'm going to maine this week for a whole week of wildlife photography, I started to think back to an article I read. Imagine you are some sort of wildlife and you see this giant creature come towards you with a giant white thing, and point it straight at you. Would you be scared? The answer is of course, so I decided to make a camo cover. Costed about $2 total, a trip to joann fabrics, and a couple hours of work.

and the answer to your question is "yes, I know how to sew."
That's so cute you sew. :D

mn shutterbug 08-02-2007, 10:48 AM You guys are a barrel of laughs. However, I think that's a great idea. You should market these. Call it the Canon Camo Body Glove.

what can I say, I have a good mom :) she taught me how to do all sorts of things when I was a little kid.
WsW-WYATT-EARP 08-02-2007, 11:57 AM HAHAHAHA you canon people crack me up .... Pay all that money for a "white" lens, brag about having the "white" lens, then cover it up :p
That is very cool Brent! Looks very professional too.
Amazes me that you are posting more and more in the N&W forum. Must be slow on the sports front......
livin4lax09 08-02-2007, 12:30 PM well the reason for the white is because of FL elements. they are very sensitive to heat so they cant be black because it will effect the elements. so there's a reason other than marketing. :)

actually, after looking at the prices more today, lenscoat charges $95 for them! If I can get my hands on some camo neoprene, then I will most certainly market them. and for cheaper than 95 dollars!
another view 08-02-2007, 05:42 PM I'm pretty sure that Seattle Fabrics (http://www.seattlefabrics.com/)(gotta love google) is the place that a friend told me about. I see they have camo and neo, but not both - but it might be worth a call.
BTW - my friend is a guy, an industrial tool maker, former rancher and built a tanner for hides out of an old cement mixing truck. He also TIG welded an aluminum kayak and has made a lot of his own outdoor clothing and gear. He's one of the neatest guys I've ever met!
livin4lax09 08-02-2007, 09:05 PM thanks AV, I sent them an email just now. They do have a camo neoprene, but it looks very strange. I'm looking for a design more like the woodland camo print. I'll let you guys know how it works out!
schrackman 08-02-2007, 11:43 PM Excellent job, Brent. Sell a few of those and eventually you'll pay for that big fancy lens in no time, hehe.
Sure wish my wife knew how to sew. I let her buy a sewing machine under the impression that she actually knew how to sew. It has sat in the closet for over a year now.

schrackman 08-03-2007, 03:11 PM Hey Brent, if you ever think about sewing a lens belt, let me know!

I'm right there with you Ray. We bought a sewing machine with the intention of my wife learning how to sew. It's a good thing my mother lives right next door since she is wiz with her sewing machine. The wife has been way to busy to even think about picking up another project like learning to sew, but hopefully in the future...
