View Full Version : Signs of the times
SmartWombat 07-22-2007, 08:53 AM Have you noticed any particularly silly signs?
Like on a packet of peanuts "may contain nuts" may, MAY ?
On the coffee machine "warning dispenses hot liquid" it had better give me hot coffee !
Post away, here's my first one ...
This was the third one we passed that stated the obvious - do the highways agency think we are so dumb they need signs to tell us it's foggy ?
Medley 07-22-2007, 09:24 AM I don't know if it qualifies as silly, so much as interesting and unique:

swmdrayfan 07-22-2007, 09:34 AM Oh BOY! I can't wait to play.
Loupey 07-22-2007, 07:50 PM Pretty funny timing. I shot this this afternoon and I was wondering if there was a sign thread.
livin4lax09 07-22-2007, 09:41 PM i love the "no left turn on red" at stop lights. as in, if the sign weren't there, it would be ok to do it.
i think there was also a court case a couple years back where a guy sued hood because he was lactose intolerant and the milk bottle didn't say "contains dairy products" and won.
Medley 07-22-2007, 09:59 PM Actually, in Oregon you can make a left turn against a red light if you're either going from a one-way road to a one-way road, or from a two-way road to a one way road. I only know that last one because I recently had to re-take the written exam, and it was the only question I missed. In light of this, those signs make more sense.

SmartWombat 07-23-2007, 01:19 PM If the Red Bull team shop is called "BULLSHOP" what do they call the toilet ?
mjs1973 07-23-2007, 02:12 PM They're gonna find out sooner or later anyway. :)
Michael, yours really cracked me up. The brake lights really added something extra. A OMG factor.
Old Timer 07-23-2007, 06:23 PM This isn't a silly sign. As a mater of fact it's pretty common around our neck of the woods. If you know what good for you you watch out for these signs. You can come up on one of these rigs in a hurry and they are not moving very fast.
SmartWombat 08-01-2007, 03:29 PM looking from the door of the pub ...
Xia_Ke 08-01-2007, 03:34 PM ROTFL... some great finds in this thread so far. I've been keeping an eye out but, haven't found anything good here lately :(

Same here in Illinois, unless one of those signs is posted. That, or I've been lucky. :)
Great idea for a thread - funny ones so far!
jorgemonkey 08-01-2007, 05:50 PM I wish I had a photo of it, its hard to shoot while driving, but while they were working on a freeway off ramp that had two lanes, there was a sign on the left that said, "Left lane closed ahead", and right across from it there was another sign that read, 'Right lane closed ahead"
I couldn't figure this one out - to me it doesn't make sense........am I missing something?
I couldn't stop to shoot.
Not sure the official name is, but there are new digital above-the-freeway signs all over NJ now. Twice I've seen this one that read:
"For emergencies, road construction and delays ahead: connect to "njroad.....com"
(not the correct website).
Now, do they want me to turn on my laptop and connect to their website to get this information? Duh!!!!!!!!!

WesternGuy 08-02-2007, 05:07 PM Michael, that sign made me laugh. One of the best ones I can recall was on a Superman Halloween costume for a kid that stated Wearing this costume does not give you the power to fly, or something to that effect.
Cheers,
WesternGuy

Didache 08-05-2007, 08:21 AM What a fun thread this is!
This pic was taken at Baker Street underground station in London. The walls are decorated with tiles depicting the pipe-smoking detective who lived just around the corner. The signs made me giggle. :D
Cheers

starriderrick 08-08-2007, 02:19 PM Great thread...Funny stuff!! Loupey...That is Hilarious!
This might not be too funny...but,considering the weather here in the Bay Area. I'll keep my eyes open... for ice. :D

mjs1973 08-11-2007, 05:29 AM I saw a couple signs on the interstate on the way home from Wyoming this week that said something like: "Road Closed Ahead When Flashing" but there were no lights on the sign to flash. Wish I would have got a pic...
SmartWombat 08-13-2007, 03:53 PM Here's another - not humorous, for me it meant "fun ahead"
just_yo 08-13-2007, 05:16 PM mostly just a test to see if i can post here. my kids thought this was funny...
Old Timer 08-13-2007, 05:23 PM And the answer is yes you can. Nice going Cathy. Good to have you over here on the dark side. Now get on the horn to Dana and get her great sign posted to this thread.
dana m. 08-13-2007, 05:28 PM Oh Larry...she did this just for ME. So that she can teach ME how to do it. Her personal lesson will be coming as soon as she finishes dinner (the things I go through for you) dana
P.S. I have never had such a tuff time posting to any thread.

P.S. I have never had such a tuff time posting to any thread.
I got faith in you Dana. You can do it and with Cathy by your side there isn't anything you can't do. Once I get you posting over here you'll be the Queen of PR no doubt in my mind.
dana m. 08-13-2007, 06:33 PM Larry....you will never know what torture this Yo woman has just put me through to get this dumb picture posted. First the picture is too large (even tho its the same one thats in the gallery)....does this mean I have to reduce anything I post in a forum down smaller then I already have it? This may be my last trip into the "dark side" ..and it may not be..lol. Thanks for pushing me Larry...you have been so great with the encouragment.
dana
P.S. thanks so much Cathy for hanging in there with me.
Old Timer 08-13-2007, 06:41 PM You the "MAN", arr I mean "Woman" Dana. Once you've done it it's old hat from here on. I expect to see lots of your great photos here on Viewfinder from now on. More people here need to get to know you!
LOL!
Thats just what parents DON'T Want!
My parents, at least.
The Puppy would be fine with me, but I would never give a kid that much caffeine.
I can't remember who, but somebody on here took this picture. I remember seeing it in a thread and saved it.

mjs1973 08-14-2007, 03:49 AM Welcome to the "Dark Side" Dana!!! That is a great sign!!!
Since you are a regular poster to the gallery, you can link your photos right from your gallery to your posts in the Forums. I don't know how large the files are that you post in the gallery but it's really easy to link them to the fourm once you do it once or twice.
photophorous 08-14-2007, 08:25 AM Considering our privacy laws, I thought this sign was funny...taken from a Main Street sidewalk.

Dana,
Love that sign - excellent must get one for the next time someone asks me to babysit.
Tel,
My dog's reply was Grrr! Nash Nash! what's a good dog?
Roger
SmartWombat 08-18-2007, 12:45 PM In this case, not a good sign to have on the front gate ...
Asylum Steve 08-20-2007, 04:04 AM i love the "no left turn on red" at stop lights. as in, if the sign weren't there, it would be ok to do it...
Actually, this is not really that weird, as there are places where you can turn left on red. One way onto one way comes to mind. Also, many think they can turn left on a red arrow, when the regular light is green...
Keep in mind a lot of these signs are not really directed at the driver, but rather so the cops can prove they were in violation in court...
readingr 08-20-2007, 07:37 AM Not sure if the Pizza sign counts but it just shows the Welsh sense of humor.

The second sign is in Weymouth and is pretty obvious.

SmartWombat 09-08-2007, 02:06 PM read the sign carefully :)
read the sign carefully :)
Nice catch! Made me laugh - probably some truth there.

SmartWombat 09-16-2007, 01:50 PM Footpaths are blighted with almost as many signs as the roads !
Didache 09-17-2007, 01:48 AM read the sign carefully :)
How does a semi-illiterate get a job designing signs? There is no apostrophe in "Areas"
Mike
Photo-John 09-17-2007, 08:27 AM First the picture is too large (even tho its the same one thats in the gallery)....does this mean I have to reduce anything I post in a forum down smaller then I already have it?
This is a great one, Dana! And a scary thought.
About posting images on the forum - you are correct. The limits are different on the forum. That's to keep the thread load times down and keep the threads formatted correctly. The gallery actually doesn't have any limits (that anyone will notice, anyway). The gallery and forum serve two different purposes and hence the differences. If I plan to post something on the forum, I size it accordingly. If I want a larger version in the gallery, I use the edit link in the gallery to replace the smaller image with the larger version.
Hope that clears things up for you.

"you have a masterful grasp of the bleedin' obvious."
there was another photo/sign that we had doing the rounds during katrina.
bunch of rednecks in full hunting gear in a swamp boat. sign said "you loot. we shoot."
also connected with katirna when everyone asks me if i was here during katrina (actually i have been here 30 years) i say yes.
and in fact we helped out a lot. we sent 2 plane loads of scallies to help with the looting..
oh well, i'll get me coat.

SmartWombat 12-27-2007, 02:26 PM Another one spotted out shopping recently.
SmartWombat 01-27-2008, 01:16 PM Not a sign, but a whole exhibition stand full of misplaced apostrophes.
The Connector Specialist's ... what?
SmartWombat 01-27-2008, 01:18 PM Another job not to apply for ...

SmartWombat 01-27-2008, 02:42 PM If he's back, where's he been?
Probably to the greengrocer for another apostrophe...
