View Full Version : Life Expectancy...

So I just realized today, while editing some photos, that I'm already over 6,000 shots on my D50. Now keep in mind I just got this at the beginning of February. When I received it, it had just under 500 shots on it. That's roughly 5,500 shots in under 3 months  Just curious, what kind of life expectancy can I expect out of the D50? Especially since I take it hiking all the time. Should I start saving for a D200 or something more solid soon? :o

I've heard of some photographers pulling off 2000+ shots during just about every photo shoot. I personally wouldn't give it a second thought. My grandfather has cameras with hundreds of thousands of shots through them and they're still running strong. Things like that usually get BETTER with time, not worse.

If you think YOUR rate is bad, I just about my D40 two weeks ago today & I've already got 2500 shots taken. :-D

Also, instead of saving for the D200 (if you're going to be saving anyway), if you've got a D50, a logical upgrade would be the D80... It's a jump from entry level to intermediate. There's no need to go to semi-pro unless you're making your living doing this or just have a fetish with high-end stuff. It's the photographer, not the camera that counts. :-D

Good lord, and I thought I had been busy...LOL My main reason for mentioning the D200 was due to it's construction being more solid than the D80 and D50. No gear fetish here. With the exception of my tripod and UV filters, all my gear is older and was used ;) I just worry because since I bought it used, I have no warranty in case something goes wrong.

I've had my D70 for about 2004-2005, and the only issue I've had is the CF pins are wearing down & need to be replaced. Thats after a little over 20,000 clicks. I've also taken the camera mountain biking, to the ocean multiple times, been dropped at least once (onto cement from a tripod!) and it's still ticking.

It doesn't get used nearly as much as it used to since I got my D2h, but it still ticking!

DOH! I can just picture your face with that one...LOL Thanks Jorge. Guess it will pretty much come down to what it usually comes down to, how well it is taken care of. I take just about every precaution possible, short of lugging a hard case. Here's praying for no accidents or malfunctions :o

The consumer level cameras like the D70, 80, 50, 40 etc. usually have an expected shutter life of 50,000 shots, sometimes more. In some cases, it may last for less, in others it may last more- I seem to remember on DPReview there was at least one person who had around 100k on their d70's...

My old D70 has about 30,000 on it and it's going strong.

My first D200 is rapidly approaching the 30k mark as well, but the shutter there is tested to 100,000 clicks. The D2 series is tested to 150,000.

Thanks deckadet :) Shutter expectancy was exactly what I was wondering about.
