I realize this is a question best answered by taking a photograph class and thats coming, but intill then....I was looking at the lense to go with a digital rebel and Im confused. The designations mean that it zooms from 17mm-40mm Right?

Or is it it can take a photo 17mm wide and up to 40MM long.

I get confused between zoom lenses and wide angle lenses that the description says this is?

Correct. The lower the number, the wider the field of view.
