hello everybody,

I want to convert my Mini DV to DVD by using DVD Recorder. Is there any different in picture quality using mode rec XP and SP for Mini DV Sony DCR-HC96? I can see the different in other mode like LP and EP clearly.

Thanks

I just checked the manual on your camera and saw no mention of an XP mode, so I'm assuming that you are talking abouit XP on your DVD recorder. I imagine that you will find the difference between Standard and Extended on the DVD player different, but not as pronounced as you would on the SP/LP settings on your camera. If the footage is important, and needs the extra visual impact, I would stick with the higher quality setting.

Thank you Michael for your information.

This is the information that I get from my DVD Recorder Samsung DVD-R120.

Mode:
XP (High Quality Mode). 1 hour-8 Mbps. The best video quality. 720*480-29.970 Hz.
SP (Standard quality mode). 2 hours-4 Mbps. 720*480-29.970 Hz.
LP (Long Recording Mode). 4 hours-2 Mbps. 352*480-29.970 Hz.
EP (Extended Mode). 6 hours (1.2 Mbps). 352*240.-29.970 Hz.

It is clear the different between SP, LP and EP as we can see from the resolution and the bandwidth (Mbps). Anybody knows how to calculate the bandwidth (Mbps).

The resolution between XP and SP mode are same but the bandwidth is different. How come?
Do you think, XP mode is SP mode but it is double the data? So like backup data to prevent lost data because of scratch from the disc. This idea comes out from my head since I cannot see the different.

You said, “but not as pronounced as you would on the SP/LP settings on your camera”
What does it mean? Is there different picture quality or the picture quality are same?

thanks

The XP mode will record up to one hour of very high quality audio/video. We use that speed if our final project is an hour or less. Anything longer than an hour, but shorter than two will go at the SP mode. Anything longer than 2 hours becomes a two-disc set. Most consumers are perfectly happy with the SP recording, being able to fit more stuff on the same amount of disc space. Try it out for yourself, you will be able to see what quality that you personally want.

Thank you for the information Mr. MJS. This camcorder makes me exited and also little confused. I will use SP mode for DVD recorder and SP mode for camcorder.
