View Full Version : Window Light Portrait
Old Timer 03-08-2007, 04:48 AM I caught Joy sitting at the breakfast table Saturday morning with some pretty nice light streaming in. I'm certainly not know for my portraits but I'd be interested in what you guy think about this. And If you have a favorite gal or guy in your life that you'd like to share a picture of here feel free to post away. I'd rather see candid natural light portrait rather than studio stuff if you don't mind.
adina 03-08-2007, 04:54 AM This is gorgeous! Photography and the model. I'm sure she is thrilled with it.
Old Timer 03-08-2007, 05:04 AM Well thank you very much Adina. Joy was pretty pleased with this one. Over the years she has become accustom to me turning the camera her way. For the most part she tolerates it. Her favorite phrase now is , "Work your magic on it."
Jimmy B 03-08-2007, 12:22 PM One of Justin, last Sunday morning. Hard to keep a 3 year old still:D

Almost all my portraits are window light as you know :D

That expression tops any technical flaws. Love this one it's going to make a great additon to the family album. That's what it's all about for me Jimmy get these kind of pictures to top off the rows of albums that he kids will someday inherit.

I know that and that's one of the reason I did this one. I was trying to get an image that would measure up to some of your. I don't have a 50mm f1.8, but I do have a 28-70 f2.8 and I think it did a pretty good job here. I'll handicap you a bit and say that anything you post in this thread has to be new work. How's that for putting the pressure on you. (And by the way I know mine doesn't measure up to yours, but you did make me try.)
Hope you liked my humble attempt.
Alison 03-08-2007, 03:26 PM Ok I'll post one...or two...or three LOL
Old Timer 03-08-2007, 03:31 PM Ok I'll post one...or two...or three LOL
These are wonderful as usual. I love the natural look and feel and as always your eyes are captivating. Nice work Ali.
Either Alison is a photoshop expert in hiding, or her whole family has just drop dead, light up your light eyes. No fair. The Shot of your wife OT is fantastic, the light looks fabulous on her. I'll be doing a new shot of my bride of 25 years for a book jacket cover soon, just haven't decided on what theme she wants. She's and author and print journalist and one of my toughest picture editors. Knows what she wants and expects me to figure it out by reading her mind.
Some day I'll figure it out.

Sound a lot like my English teacher/education administrator wife. I guess that after 35 years you are suppose to be able to do that, but I'll be darned if I can.
We might have to start a long term, clueless husband group.
Lionheart 03-08-2007, 08:28 PM Awesome portrait, OT. I've always been partial to window light portraits because of the softer lighting, and the way the face as the point of focus seems more accentuated.
Here's a couple of my son (yeah, I know, they always seem to be my favorite portrait subjects, he he).
Old Timer 03-09-2007, 04:22 AM Here's a couple of my son (yeah, I know, they always seem to be my favorite portrait subjects, he he).
Wonderful portraits Leon. Really like that first one, he looks really lost in his thoughts. So glad to see this post from you. We're not seeing nearly enough on your photos. Your going to let those two kids grow up on us and we're going to miss it all. For many years my four children were my favorite subjects now that the grandchildren have come along it seems my kids kind of take a back seat in the getting your picture taken wars.

Great shot OT! The light is perfect, and that's a very nice smile you caught on the lovely Joy!
Here's a shot of my lovely wife, a reminder to all of you buried under six feet of snow, that summer is coming!
MonkeyWrench 03-09-2007, 05:13 AM Very nice OT. Love the eyes and smile. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. Alison has inspired me as well and I plan on getting a 50mm lens with my tax return. My wife has final say and approval on all pictures that feature her. I think it’s in our marriage contract somewhere.

Thanks for the kind words Robert. Nice to have this reminder that spring is nearly here and summer is just around the corner. This thread would have not been complete without at least one photo of the lovely Dawn. You don't have to wait for summer to take pictures of her. I'm sure she looks just as fetching in a parka. Please give her our best.

I'm hoping to add that 50mm to my arsenal soon as well Russ. I sometimes slip a photo or two by Joy but this one did have her full approval.

Actually, it's not. But it is implied.

BMOORE 03-10-2007, 05:30 PM I shot this with the canon kit lens and a sheet hung on the wall for backdrop. This is my
grandson, his sister made her ViewFinder debut last month.
Alison 03-11-2007, 03:44 AM My 50mm strikes again!!!
Here's a shot I got yesterday while on our way to the beach.
I thought it was a pretty good shot considering I was in a moving vehicle and in the passenger seat, twisting my body round to face my baby girl.

YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!
I keep trying to convince myself that i love my 17-40mm L lens and I do when I run out of space but my 50mm is my TRUE LOVE!
Here's a shot I got of Trinny today. She is standing by the baby gate in our kitchen door. The kitchen windows are behind me.

Wonderful pose and expression. The main comment that I would have on this one is that the eyes have gone a little flat on you. To get a little more life into them try reflecting a little light back at Justin off a piece of white card board or some other type reflector. This should put in a catch light and give him a sparkle in those big eyes to go with the big grin.
Jimmy B 03-12-2007, 10:18 AM Thanks OT, I will try something along those lines next time, He was busy playing in his sand box,and I kept telling him to look at me.
The sun will be out on the weekends here in Seattle area one of these months
Jimmy
Lionheart 03-13-2007, 12:27 AM amazing what a "standard" 50mm can do. My earlier posts are also 50mm :-)
Old Timer 03-13-2007, 04:59 AM Here a couple more that I took over the weekend while in Nashville. I caught Jack in front of a large window with morning light streaming in. Jack like most little ones can change moods in a hurry here are a few different moods.
Alison 03-13-2007, 07:37 AM Oh wow! Gorgeous shots OT!
The clarity and colours are wonderful.
What lens did you use for these?
Here's a couple more from me.
My son, complete with ketchup, pepsi cup and rosie cheeks from playing in the fresh air lol.

Two more for the Oh These are Great Album. That little guy is always so animated I love pics of him. Love the way your colors really pop. I see he is in his favorite shirt too. On the ones I posted of Jack I was using the 28-70 f2.8. It is pretty much my standard lens and stays on the D70 most of the time.

Oh bless you OT. It's so nice to know how much I am appreciated. Thank you.
Here's a funny one. I was trying to stop the glare in Danielle's lenses and told her tilt her glasses down a little. She came up with the pose. Cheeky little monkey LOL.

Did you think of trying a polarizing filter to remove the glare?
Alison 03-20-2007, 01:24 AM I don't have a polarizing filter. Thanks for the tip though.
Medley 03-20-2007, 04:20 AM I've not posted many images here, and I guess it's time I started. Allow me to introduce my nephews Michael and his big brother Matthew (though only one fits the subject):

It seems all your children have a flare for the dramatic. They make for wonderful subjects. You are indeed a lucky photographer to have such a large in house assortment of models. I always love your images of them.
Alison 03-20-2007, 09:41 AM Thank you OT.
And y'know what? They are my favourite subjects. It's not just a biased opinion either.
They are incredible. A pleasure to photograph.
Going through some of my older photos, here are some from last year in april/may. Location Hamilton, ON. The Building...none other than the Lister Block herself.

Thanks. I'll be shooting a bunch of black, white and gray M&M's with my daughter that she got me while in New York this weekend. I'll have to resurrect the B&W for color thread later.

Ermmm what did I do now? LOL
Old Timer 04-13-2007, 06:33 PM I posted this one just after Easter over in the gallery and just realize that it fit this thread also. It was my grandson Wesley's first Easter and this little guy was in his basket. He was a rather willing subject sitting in front of the same window where I took Joys picture that I lead off this thread with over a month ago.
Ok......I'm convinced! 50mm will be my next lens.

Wonderful soft light and great expressions. It's what a shoot like this is suppose to be about. How did you get the baby to look at you too? I'm sure it's one Katy will treasure for years to come.

Alison 04-14-2007, 09:39 AM Thank you OT.
I was actually a little disappointed in it to be honest. Not my usual lighting. It's more direct on her face, although my kitchen was very bright today. The weather is gorgeous here today.
I love her eyes though
Anyway I decided to take a few more.
I think I prefer this lighting better. One side of the face in the shade
If you are wondering what they are doing...they are watching Dora the Explorer on a portable DVD player :)
And another of Lisa.

Old Timer 04-23-2007, 06:54 PM I started this thread nearly two months a go with a photo of Joy seating in the warm glow of the kitchen window at her sisters. It's been about a week since there has been a post to the thread so I'll put it to sleep with another image of my bride of 35 years this time at out daughters house over the weekend. We were there to welcome our newest grandson and Joy had the glow of a young mother herself. Thanks to everyone that participated with some truly great pictures in this thread.

I was amazed at the quality and sharpness of it :)
I may have found new love in this lens. Sshhhhh musn't let my 50 mm here me say that! LOL

Thanks you Alison I think Joy grows more beautiful with every passing year and these new grandkids are really putting a sparkle in her eyes.
That portrait of yours is amazing. I absolutely love the crop you did. It is sharp beyond words. What was you aperture setting on that one? The one of Joy was done in pretty low light and was shot at f2.8 with the 28-70. It's little harder to keep both eyes sharp when you are going that low as I'm sure you know.

Yes, I know it's hard to get both eyes sharp at 2.8. Unless you are almsot head on to someone like in the shot below.
I usually try to keep my aperture around 3.5 to 5.6 (if the light allows me to).
That shot was taken in Manual mode, ISO 400, SS 1/100, F/5.6, focal length 40mm.
I'm wishing now that I had used the F/4, that that lens allows, to try to get a bit more bg blur but I think I rushed to get my settings before he ran off again lol.
In the shot below, it was pretty dark, kitchen window in the next room lighting Wesley's face and the lounge window behind him. I used my 50mm for this one and my settings were Manual mode, ISO 400, SS 1/60, F/2.8.
He was watching a dvd so he was pretty chilled. That allowed me to have my shutter slower than I would normally use on him

Gorgeous once again, he has the most beautiful eyes. For some reason I didn't realize his name was Wesley. I have a grandson named Wesley and out of my four children and four grandsons he is the only one with blue eyes. I'll be with him this weekend in Louisville, doing a little baby sitting and I hope photography. I just hope I can do his eyes justice the way you do your Wesley's.

Because of her freckles I guess.
Us red heads hate our freckles lol.
And as for the glow, well, I think it's probably a bit of both ;)

You can tell her for me that the freckles are what set her apart and make her special. And as you well know that red hair sets hearts to pounding so she has a lot going for her. And she has her own personal photographer, what more could a young woman want?
Alison 04-28-2007, 03:05 AM Y'know what? I am really enjoying this thread.
I don't know why Lisa grabbed a towel and put it under a hat or why they put a wig on Trinity, or why Jenny tied a pillow case to her head.
I didn't ask them to do any of this.
They just kept grabbing stuff lol.
The twins are ALWAYS doing hilarious stuff like this!
It was fun to fool around with them today, rather than having my photographer head on. (Well, to a certain extent I had to have. Still had to do my settings).
You know what I mean? Composition, bg's etc. They were just fooling around and I was just snapping.
These are sooc as far as the exposures, in-camera crops, etc are concerned. Removed a couple of little blemishes and applied a sharpen for web but that was it.
It felt refreshing just to have some fun with my camera. It reminded me that this is what it's all about!
These are all window light and all manual settings.
At one point I had my aperture at f/2.0!!!
Old Timer 04-30-2007, 06:18 AM I always get such a kick out of the twins. They are going to be a real hand full as teens. Just keeping up with them will be a fulltime job. They are a riot. Loads of fun just recording thier antics. Nice job Ali.
Old Timer 04-30-2007, 06:23 AM Maybe not my best example but one that really took on the hue of the surroundings. This was taken in strong side window light in a hotel room this weekend. Joy and I were doing a little baby sitting with Wesley while his parents were off attending a meeting.
Alison 04-30-2007, 10:37 AM Look at those GORGEOUS eyes!
Here are a couple more from the same day.
I wasn't going to put these two in but then I thought, what the heck lol.
Xia_Ke 04-30-2007, 01:20 PM Curtis watching the storm clouds roll through. On a side note, guess it's time to wash the windows :blush2:

Thanks Wes I have to agree. Wesley was my great grandfathers name as well as his father's middle name so he came by it pretty honest. I like it when we are able to keep family names alive in the newer generations. All of my children and grandchildren have names that link them to past generations.
Alison 05-03-2007, 10:50 AM I LOVE the name Wesley too!!!
I got a few more shots yesterday and today.
I'm so lucky to have sooooo many willing models
All shot with my 50mm and Manual settings
#1 ISO 400, f/5.0, SS 1/60
#2 ISO 200, f/4.5, SS 1/160
#3 ISO 200, f/2.8, SS 1/125
#4 ISO 400, f/2.8, SS 1/100
Old Timer 05-03-2007, 11:29 AM Love the second one and of course I'm a sucker for the babies big liquid eyes (beautiful). From the looks of the first on someone around the house must do a little sewing. Matching gowns!!
Alison 05-03-2007, 12:11 PM I'm a sucker for her big brown eyes too.
You guessed right about the sewing.
My Aunty is always making clothes for my children. You've seen Wesley's shirts and Trinity's layered dresses.
Well she made Danielle some pyjama's and then presented me with a doll that she bought from a charity shop for 25p. She has so far made the doll some pyjama's to match Danielle's, a dress with a hat, a t-shirt with dungarees and hat to match.
I think she is still in the process of making the doll more clothes.
Shall I bore you with more pictures of the doll?
Of course, they would have to be window light portraits lol.
Alison 05-12-2007, 06:07 PM Gina was ready to go to a party this evening. She looked so pretty that I asked her to put on the charm for my camera :D
Boy, does she know how to work the camera or what!
Alison 05-12-2007, 06:34 PM I'll put this one in here too. Although, it's photoshopped to the max haha.

Awww what a sweetie!
I went to my niece's house today to take pics of her 1 week old baby girl
I'm pretty pleased with what I got
KyRain 05-18-2007, 07:45 PM the silhouette is just awesome, she will treasure these forever. Beautiful work.

Thank you. I love the silhouette too and when I showed her that shot on the LCD I loved her reaction. She loved it too
Here are a couple more from me. Danielle with her doll.
I think the first shot is my fave. I love the hairlight!
Old Timer 05-29-2007, 04:33 AM NO doubt about it you are the Queen of Window Light Portraits. That first one is a real treasure. Great job once again Alison.
readingr 05-29-2007, 05:29 AM Alison,
Every time I see one of your portraits I want to pick up the camera, but I get scared because you've set the standard so high.
I bow down to the Godess of portraits.
One day after a bottle of whisky:lol:
Roger
Alison 05-29-2007, 06:28 AM You are both far too kind :blush2:
