View Full Version : Need Thoughts On My Next Lens D50...
kalvis917 01-20-2007, 02:25 PM Hello All,
Any suggestions on my next lens. Currently, I have Sigma 18-55 & Nikon 70-300 for my Nikon D50. I have about $400 to spend. I am considering just having one lens. I cannot afford the Nikon 18-200. I am consider the Tamron, Promaster or Sigma 18-200 or 28-300mm. I'm looking for something that has VR. I could use some advise on this please. Thank You!!!!! :)

Gee whiz, nobody answered yet and the only reply I can make is not what you want to hear.
Be patient, put some more money aside and go for the Nikon 18-200 VR. That's what you really want. You can forget about the 18-55 and the 70-300 (unless you're shooting birds or air displays). I have the Nikon and it's what I use most of the time.
Making an 11x zoom with VR that performs well is breaking the rules. Only Nikon have succeeded. Go for the best. Sure it's more expensive but you're wasting your money buying a compromise.

kalvis917 01-21-2007, 01:22 PM Thank You Charles, I appreciate your reply. I found the Nikon VR @ Ritz for $749.00, That's much better than the Ebay items. If I order through Ritz, I'm not sure what the wait time is. I'll let you know what I decide to go with.
Thanks Once Again
another view 01-21-2007, 01:27 PM My question would be what do you need - what are your current lenses not doing for you? Personally I'm a fan of wide angle lenses and love my Sigma 10-20. It's a little under $500 USD (not sure where you're at), but it may not be something you're interested in.

Buy a $100 50mm f/1.8 and see what the best glass is like. It will blow away the lenses you have and put you on the track to the good stuff...
kalvis917 01-23-2007, 06:46 PM I currently have a Sigma 18-55 & Nikon 70-00mm. I would like to just be able to use one lens and not have to switch back & forth. The 18-200 is little more than I wanted to spend, plus who knows when you would get it. Thanks All....
kalvis917 01-24-2007, 04:31 PM O.K., I broke down and ordered the Nikon 18-20mm VR lens. I am very exicted about it. I should have it within 3-6 months, which is fine with me, give me some extra time to find some additional funds. Paid $790.00 for it, UV filter & shipping. Can't wait to get it.
Thanks All:) :) :) :) :) :)
starriderrick 01-24-2007, 10:10 PM Yeah, VR's are nice...
I have a 50mm 1.8D it blows away lenses that are $600.00.
I also have a Sigma 10-20, it's a sweet piece of glass.Lastly I got a Sigma 28-300, it's a bit soft, but acceptable in bright light, very low distortion at 300mm.
A Nikkor DX ED piece of glass is in the future though.

Lava Lamp, you are a silver tongue devil!
You are also right. My 80-200mm f2.8 is my most used lens, and my 28-70mm f2.8 runs second, in time on camera. But I would NEVER, ever, consider getting rid of my 50mm f1.4!!!
:-D
