When searching through reviews I read that the lens that comes with the camera is slow and low quality. What lens would one buy to get optimal results?

Thanks, Kitty

Reviews have to be taken with a large grain of salt. So much equipment is listed as being great (impossible due to the definition of "average"). Other times, reviewers follow the herd and label equipment as good or bad depending upon what others have said.

The kit lens is not great but it isn't that bad either. It is well worth the $100 or less it costs. Most people will never see any difference between the kit lens and expensive L glass.

If you want to start out with new glass, please tell us what type of photography you like the most.

When I bought my XT, I bought the body only with the lens you see in my sig. However, all the reading Ive done has said that the kit lens is actually pretty good for landscape shots. So Im going to purchase it for those type of shots. Im not ready to spend $500+ on lenses yet. Here are some pictures Ive taken, http://forums.photographyreview.com/showthread.php?t=27900
