Hey everyone,

My name is Jay and I'm a photoholic.

I just found this forum today while doing some research for a new lens fo rmy Olympus Evolt E-500 and I have to say I am hooked. I have been reading threads and looking at pics for almost 3 hours now.

I just wanted to share a few images of mine from the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course at the Grand Am Cup on June 22 2006.

There were a few Porsche's in the race that were all having some flameout issues through out the day. This one was shot at 150mm zoom (Olympus Zuiko 40 - 150) 100 ISO and 6.2F-stop. Shot in Raw data with a minor color correction to show the flames a bit better.

I then loaded on my el-cheapo Tokina 3x Tele-converter to get a slightly closer shot and waited about 4 laps and 25 more shots to get it just right

I also noticed that a lot of the Chevy Cobalts in teh race (well all of them actually) were having a hard time staying grounded in the esses. All of them did the same thing in this turn along with a few of the Hyundai Tiburons as well.

I really sucks when you wathc a guy come from behind to take the lead in the race, and then in the last 15 laps he busts his suspension and ends up last. This was the guys we were rooting for (when Idon't know the field I pick one from the program and see how well he does through out the race as I root for him/her) Notice the front left tire turned inwards as he runs down the straight away. We figure it was a busted Tie Rod most likely.

This one is for all the true mustang fans. This is the front end of an '03 or '04 SVT Cobra that was in the parking lot on the way into the race. Normaly I would blur out the plate.. but since the plate IS the shot.. well I couldn't exaclty do that now could I?

Next year I am hoping to find a better location to shoot from to avoid the fence in the shots all the time. With my old Pentax 35 MM SLR I could focus through it but the Digital SLR I use now can't seem to do that.. even on manual focus /shrug. I got to know the guy on the Tower that was filming that section of the track a bit this year, so I am hoping that I can maybe bring him a case of Canadian Beer for a chance to sit up top with him and shoot down the back straightaway next time.

Keep shooting

Jay

You think he'll let you up there for a case of Kokanee? :p

Welcome to the site. Glad to hear you're enjoying it. And always happy to have more good sports photos.

Post a review for your camera and lenses, please! We need more Olympus digital SLR and lens reviews.

Welcome Jay. I finaly got around to saying that since I had a busy weekend....and I am seill trying to recover. It could take a few days though :D

Shooting motorsports is fun, but it's also dangerous....always shoot with BOTH eyes open! For daylight shooting I normally set the camera to 800 iso & 800 shutter and then control the exposure with the aperature for correct exposure, which is normally a step or two above the center mark. It's best if you can get the light on the side your shooting from but that isn't always possible. You may end up with overexposed sky or walls but at least the car should be exposed correctly. Your also correct about the fence. Most road courses have holes to shoot through, sometimes you have to hunt for them. Keep in mind though you need to have credentials to shoot from the holes though.
