The man says not having posted here as yet I should say hello in the intro forum... "Hello" Phew, that's a load off my mind! Nice site, not sure how long I'll stay though, download times for pages are at best barely tolerable at worst "I can't be bothered" Of course this is via a dial-up connection. Although I must say, page download times using work's broadband connection aren't that much better. Maybe I am holding my lips wrong? (Aussie humour)

Yep, this site is pathetically slow no matter what you're connected through...

Hi Martin and welcome to PR. Yes, PR is a bit slow, especially on dialup. However, of all the sites I've perused, you won't find a better bunch of willing, helpful and friendly people anywhere on the internet. Believe me, when I tell you, the lag time is well worth the wait and where else will you get unlimited uploads for free, unlimited tips and help for free, and some of the best pictures anywhere in the world......All for free?? I haven't really found any others.
I hope you stick around. Upload some pictures and ask some questions and you'll soon learn the value for time spent.
Oh by the way, I may be a moderator, but I don't work for PR. I began in photography last year and with the help of this site, I am about to open my own photo business. Not something I'd ever thought about until PR helped me reach my potential.
Good luck
Ken

We hope you will at least hang around long enough to keep us guessing as to how long it is you will continue to hang around.

Martin-
I am painfully aware of the performance issues. Can you be specific and tell me what is slow for you? My developers are actually working on some performance issues right now. The more information I have the better.

Thanks-

Hello All,
Well I really must say that I have never yet had such a warm welcome, let alone the ship's captain and a moderator taking the time to lend a sympathetic ear! I would have to agree with you Ken, this is a one of the best subscription free photo-hosting sites around and I understand fully that is only possible displaying by income producing adds. In terms of visibility to the user (me), the site is aesthetically very attractive and I appreciate the clean and clutter free approach to page design. That said, Photo-John, I have no idea why download times are so slow. The photoreview.com marquee loads quickly followed by either the HP or Pentax banner advertisements (which seem to have to cycle thru their animations before anything else happens), followed by the content of the page proper. Not sure if this info helps, I do realise that it isn't realistic to expect warp speed via dial-up and please don't take offence at my earlier comments. But if your developers can speed things up even a little in the future, I'm sure everyone would applaud their efforts. Thanks again to all, I'm going to check out all of your images and leave a comment or three here and there if that's ok. Looking forward to some inspiration.

Page loads are actually pretty fast from my home computer (cable), but slow at work. The work computer runs IE, and the home computer runs Firefox. I don't know if the borwser has anything to do with it, but I generally have very few problems with page loading. Only when there are quite a few on the boards do I notice any real problem.

I haven't noticed any continual problem either. I use Firefox or Opera 9 on Windows XP. Most of the time, the performance is no different than other sites (broadband). Perhaps the abundance of photographs makes the site seem slower than it should, especially on dial-up.

I use dialup from home (Internet Explorer) and aside from simply being slow, frequently pages never finish loading. It happens a lot here, and never on any other discussion forums I go to.

Page loading, it's how PR.com separates those worthy of its content from the impatient masses.

If you can see the site, you have earned the right to see it.

Well I must be extra worthy, because it always comes right up for me (cable modem)

Welcome!
