Lava Lamp 06-24-2006, 06:49 AM I have been looking for 2 days now and cant find a ID, SmartWombat Almo ? Little Wood Satyr, I think. (I have a great butterfly field guide.) http://www.cirrusimage.com/butterfly_lwoodsatyr.htm Loupey 06-24-2006, 07:19 AM That's a smart image, Knight. Perhaps Paul can replace the spider sticky with this one (butterflies and moths). We would probably get more participation. Knight, no more complaining about your lens - your images are great! Knight 06-24-2006, 07:20 AM Think your right LL , im on my way to the city this afternoon . Any suggestions on a BF book ? Loupey i have to do a little PS with most of my photos with this lens, it`s at its sharpest around 200mm but for $ 179.00 i cant complain. As for spiders the week is not over yet :) my wife tells me that she squished a big one a few days ago lol . Im having a hard time finding one lol. paulnj 06-24-2006, 02:02 PM Well.... since loupey asked so nicely :D Sunday starts flutterby week and this is the thread I'll stick  Lava Lamp 06-24-2006, 02:15 PM Think your right LL , im on my way to the city this afternoon . Shot at the butterfly house at Callaway Gardens. Lava Lamp 06-24-2006, 04:32 PM Don't know what kind they are. Shot at the butterfly house at Callaway Gardens. I've been to Callaway a few times. It's great. Have you seen their raptor demo? The white butterfly is called a Paper Kite or sometimes a Rice Paper Butterfly. The think the other one is an Owl Butterfly. Lava Lamp 06-24-2006, 04:36 PM Here's a Common Buckeye... Knight 06-24-2006, 05:03 PM Paul im wondering if you should ad Caterpillars to this thread also C ing that butterflies come from them ? Anyways heres one its a Gypsy Moth Caterpillar. Knight 06-24-2006, 06:40 PM Think its part of a shell that those crab apples have on the flower before they turn into apples ,ill check first thing in the morning. I think the tree still has some on it . mjs1973 06-25-2006, 06:32 AM Here's a monarch catapiller from last weekend, and a a butterfly of some sort from yesterday. Bevb 06-25-2006, 01:15 PM Have'nt a clue what type of butterfly this is, but noticed it landing on long grass but ignoring the close poppy heads and daisys. Knight 06-25-2006, 01:29 PM Good Captures Payn, LL , Mjs1973 and Bev , I think we truly need a resident Bug master here to ID all these insects. Wonder if there are any volunteers ? Lava Lamp 06-25-2006, 02:17 PM Here's a monarch catapiller from last weekend, and a a butterfly of some sort from yesterday. The orange one is a fritiallary of some sort -- maybe an Atlantis Fritillary... SmartWombat 06-25-2006, 02:32 PM Glenn, what is that on the leaf below the catapillar anyway? Looks like a gall, not sure what sort though. kkraczek 06-25-2006, 03:04 PM Here's a monarch catapiller from last weekend, and a a butterfly of some sort from yesterday. Looks like that site will be very helpfull! manacsa 06-25-2006, 09:07 PM Must be fate. I shoot moths for the first time and I come to PR to see a thread just for it. Unfortunately the majority of my shots are out of focus so I'll only have a couple to share. Live and learn! Any IDs are always appreciated :D manacsa 06-25-2006, 09:24 PM From the top... manacsa 06-25-2006, 09:32 PM I have no idea what the dark bug is.... manacsa 06-25-2006, 10:38 PM Last ones (I think)... I believe the second photo is a different type of moth...I hope it is  SmartWombat 06-25-2006, 11:19 PM Have'nt a clue what type of butterfly this is, but noticed it landing on long grass but ignoring the close poppy heads and daisys. I'll ID that one tonight Bev. Haven't been out hunting lepidoptera for 20 years, so I'm a little rusty. OK got it, I knew it was odd, it's one of the Browns (Satyridae) that isn't brown :) Marbled White (Melanargia galathea) usually flies in July and August. Which explains why yours is fresh looking. Loupey 06-26-2006, 08:10 AM I have no idea what the dark bug is.... Eric, I have no idea what it is either. But it's cool that you captured it! Even if the DOF is off a little (precisely in between the moth and flying thingamabug as Murphy would dictate), I'm glad you tripped the shutter. I imagine that the flying one did not stay there for long. manacsa 06-26-2006, 12:38 PM Eric, I have no idea what it is either. But it's cool that you captured it! Even if the DOF is off a little (precisely in between the moth and flying thingamabug as Murphy would dictate), I'm glad you tripped the shutter. I imagine that the flying one did not stay there for long. Yes, that thingamabug was all over the place. I had the camera at 3 fps and by the next frame the thingamabug was behind the moths wing. I thought those two would duke it out :D Glad you like it. Thanks. Lava Lamp 06-26-2006, 12:54 PM Last ones (I think)... I believe the second photo is a different type of moth...I hope it is  The first one is a checkerspot -- perhaps a Northern Checkerspot, and the other one is folded wing skipper -- maybe a Delaware Skipper. Lava Lamp 06-26-2006, 12:56 PM Anybody know what this one is? Lava Lamp 06-26-2006, 12:58 PM This one isn't in my North America guide. I haven't been able to identify him yet. Any ideas? paulnj 06-26-2006, 01:24 PM Anybody know what this one is? It's a swallowtail... I do believe it's a black swallowtail, but it may be a spicebush swallowtail ? paulnj 06-26-2006, 01:50 PM Here's a great link ...http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/ Where did you take that image LL? It seems to have the shape of one of the Heliconian butterflies, but I can't ID it. Knight 06-26-2006, 02:00 PM Eastern Black Swallowtail LL The other is not in the book lol Also a good Link to N/A Butterflies http://www.cirrusimage.com/butterflies_of_North_America.htm Knight 06-26-2006, 04:04 PM OK LL the best that i can come up with is A Blue Heliconius Butterfly from Peru Or a Sara_Longwing . It seems to have the shape of one of the Heliconian butterflies, but I can't ID it. I'm not sure, but I think it was here: http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/butterflies/ Of course, that won't help you figure out where the butterfly came from, but it is a great place to visit.:D Lava Lamp 06-26-2006, 04:55 PM Here's one of the first micro shots I ever took (2001 or 2002?). It was from a Minolta film camera with a 100-300mm Tamron lens and a reversed 50mm f/1.4 Canon screwed on in reverse. Do you all know what it is? Lava Lamp 06-26-2006, 04:58 PM This is from 2005 with a Tamron 90mm macro plus 1.4x TC using a D70 digital. Same animal (or maybe his/her grandson/daughter) from 2005. paulnj 06-26-2006, 05:21 PM It is indeed a SARA LONGWING Heliconius sara  http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/butterflygallery/butterfly_proc.asp?page_no=2&MaxRecords=16&record_count=43&total_recs=43&Common=&Genus=Heliconius&Species=&country=&state_province=&PhotographerID=&FamilyID=&PhotoID=&trys=2&show_all=no WE got an ID together. Loupey 06-28-2006, 10:11 PM Shot a Luna Moth many years ago but nothing recent :( Here's what I have so far. For now, I'm after a better shot of that Snowberry Clearwing Hummingbird Moth (is that a mouthful or what?!) that I shot earlier. manacsa 06-30-2006, 12:27 AM Not the best shot but this thing is really a big butterfly. Can anyone ID? Thanks in advance. kkraczek 06-30-2006, 09:45 AM That a pretty cool looking BF Does anyone have a LUNA MOTH to offer ?
