Hi - I'm DDK...
Actually my name is Diane Dupuis-Kallos but that's way too long... I work as a secretary in a high school in Montreal - so the kids started calling me ddk for short and it stuck...

I've always enjoyed taking photos - but I've been taking it much more seriously in the past 3 years. Took courses, workshops, read whatever I could get my hands on - drove other photographers nuts with questions - and then practiced practiced practiced. I feel comfortable saying I'm no longer a beginner... LOL!

I shoot with a Fuji S5200 10x zoom point and shoot which I really love but I know it has it limitations and although I don't want to (due to the weight, carrying around extra lenses, the dirt on the sensor, etc. etc.) I figure my next step will be a dslr... but not yet! Gotta keep buying those lotto tickets!

Thanks to AG for telling me about this place! I can't wait to have more time to explore and meet new people.

Bye for now!
DDK

Hello DDK! Nice to have you aboard! We look forward to seeing your pictures! But, most importantly, we expect a whole bunch of "dirt" on your friend Alison here. She's a real troublemaker! :D

I hope you'll take the time to put something in the <A href="http://forums.photographyreview.com/showthread.php?t=10010">People</a> thread about yourself. It's a great place to learn about our other members, too.

Hello!

My name is Amanda and I'm new to the board. I'm also pretty new to photography. I've been playing around and trying to learn as much as I can for a couple years now but unfortunately I've never been able to take a class. I feel like it's about time I actually get serious about it as a hobby so I've made the big and scary step of buying a digital SLR camera. After years of dreaming I finally did it a couple weeks ago and I love it! I bought the Canon Kiss X (Rebel XTi) and am getting comfortable with it despite its being so much more camera than I'm used to.

I can hardly wait to get into the board a bit more and learn as much as I can.

Hi. I'm technically old school, but haven't logged in in over a year. Everytime I come back here, it seems as though we have a new and improved message board.

I'm still a film girl, by the way.

Hello everyone, my name is Dave and I am from Northern California and shoot with a Nikon D50 which my wife bought me for our first anniversary about 6 months ago. I always loved taking pictures but now I would like to get a little more serious. My goal is to master full manual mode :D I now take my camera and tripod everywhere I go. I am lucky to have lots of nature & beauty to shoot at work every day. My favorite things to shoot is oceans, animals and cars :)

Thanks and hello to all. I'm a mixed bag of experience having come from a professional photography background in catalog work years ago with a strong graphics and computer bias. Been out of touch for a while and moved to the warmer climes of Phoenix AZ back in '98 (and lovin it) but health issues of my spouse have kept me busy over the years. Looking to get back into photography just for fine art and hobby use... relaxation. Wondered if anyone would share their recommendations for a good, reasonably priced digital slr with about 10mp and removable optics... or their best recommendations???

Hey. My name's Darrel and up until a couple of years ago my cameras were point-and-shoot, primarily for recording occasional family events (not much in the way of quality).

Two and a half years ago, I bought a digital (Powershot A80) just before our son's wedding and learned just enough about how to use it to take a lot of bad photos at his wedding. Since then, I've learned a lot more about using it but am interested in learning more about photography in general.

I look forward to looking in on you folks as time permits. :)

Hi all,
My name is dinesh. this is my first time in any such forum or group so i am going through a learning phase with the activities here as well as the topic of discussion - photography. i am not too regular being online either so the process will be slow.

have been doing photography on and off since 1978 but had a long off period between 1988 and 2004. just no time with all the academics and getting into the career routine.

really love the site and goings on here. there's a lot to share and learn. will try to make to the most of it.

Hi!
My name is Nick and I've been itching to try out a new hobby since I left audio.
I'm a newbie of course and I'm going to start out with a Nikon D80. My Sony crapcam doesn't have the potential to do much so I'm upgrading I guess. :)

I would love to learn how to take awesome shots like I've seen some of the people I know do.

Hi all. I'm Kate. I am a Canadian living in Texas. I'm not working right now so my husband has been great about encouraging my photography. I don't get out and shoot as much as I should but I always love it when I do.

I guess I'm just here to pick a few pointers, maybe get some inspiration. People and portraits is what I love to shoot but I don't have any studio lights and so it can be tough.

I don't have a local gallery up but feel free to check out my PBase gallery (http://www.pbase.com/kagogrl) - any comments and suggestions are more than welcome. Hopefully I'll get things set up here soon.

I look forward to learning from you all.

I've also added permanent links to the "50mm lens war" thread and the "photoshopped" thread since they have both proven to be so popular and long-lasting. Congratulations guys! :D

Hello,

My name is Russ and I have been hooked on taking pictures since 2001 when I won a Canon PowerShot S200 at a company raffel. And even though it was only 2 MP I have taken some great shots. I then advanced to the Canon Rebel K2 35mm. I was still learning the features on it (It was my first none point and shoot camra) When my wife bought me the Canon Digital Rebel XT for Christmas. Gota luv the wife. I had great success with the 35mm with just using the auto settings. Got some killer pics on my son's 8th grade DC trip. Shot 10 rolls of film and would of shot more if the batteries hadn't died. Even though I had more camera with the Rebel XT 35mm versus the ole PowerShot it was hard going from Digital to 35mm. I am happy to be back in the world of Digital but plan to keep my 35mm. Looking forward with learning and sharing as I explore my new hobbie with all of you.

Just wanted to say hello. Studied photography some, too many years ago to count, still remember quite a bit about it but very out of practice. Life and family seemed to get in the way. Just bought a Canon Rebel Xti, looking for new lenses. I have a busy few months coming up with a couple of trips, son and nephew graduating from Air Force boot camp, motorcycle rides, etc., hope to post a number of pics for you to pick over so I can learn. Haven't looked in here much yet but really like what I'm seeing.

First I want to thank all the posters. The posts on this site are very helpful. I have been taking photos on and off for more years than I care to mention...still using my original Canon AE-1 and kit; but my daughter has finally convinced me to go digital...so I'm looking to replace everything, and learn all over again. Primary nterests are youth sports (grandkids) and wildlife.....again thanks to the posters who have provided lots of input to help me make some decisions.

Hello Hello.

I have always loved photography and recently had a position where I was doing work for an auction house, working on their online/offline catalogs. I was using a Canon 10D and an XT while there, but have never owned a DSLR. I have been saving money and getting the lead out to finally pick one up, and I came across this site.

I would love to get back into shooting again, and ideally find a job that integrates photography and video games. I also love film and music.

Hope to be around a while. Keep up the good work.

Hello Everyone!

I am an amateur Photographer pursueing a Professional degree. I have always loved taking pictures.
I recently upgraded to a DSLR and Film SLR. I have to say I am quite overwhelmed by them both. I never really bothered myself with photography terminology or finding out about equipment and I am now finding myself now lost in the clouds.
I would describe my past photography as fly by night, take it and if it looks good great!, if not then alter it. Now Im more thoughtful of the shots I am going to take and also I now take the time to do a set up if necessary.
I am Starting school in June and Im glad I found this site. There seams to be some great infomation floating around here and I have already found some people to be helpful.
I look foward to being a active part of this community.

hi! i'm monica. i'm not new to photography -- been shooting since high school, but my main camera broke about a year ago (nikon n80) and has been at nokia for most of that time. since they have virtually stopped making all film cameras, i had no clue when it would be fixed. so i'm going digital. going for the d80 -- thanks to advice i got on this forum!

i wouldn't say i'm an expert, but i have some stuff that's pretty good (i think!). i'll post some photos once my d80 is up and running.

looking forward to sharing some of my new photos and old ones and getting to know everyone.

Hello.
My name is Jack Holtzman and I am a recent NYC transplant to LA.
I really like the "feel" of this forum and I feel right at home already.
My principal interests are medium format photography (I finally was able to afford a nearly-new Hasselblad, thanks to the "digital revolution").
So, all you digital guys, THANK YOU!
In all seriousness, I'm happy to be here and thanks for having me.

Hi there! Just found this forum. Everyone seems pretty nice. I've been taking photos for years, but I've just recently begun to take my photography a little more seriously.(especially since it costs so much for film/processing, etc! :) )
I just signed up for a beginning photography class, as I am tired of the "fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants" kind of thing. I really want to be one with my camera so that I can transfer what I see to film. I love my manual SLR, and hope to move to a medium format camera at some point in the future.
Just wanted to say thanks for having this place where all kinds of folks can get together and share.
P.S. I call myself a beginner cuz I am still not "one with my camera" yet ;)

Hi everyone. I have just joined. It seems like a friendly and welcoming community and I'm happy to be here. I've always wanted to share my photos, receive some criticism and be inspired by the accomplishments of others. I've been taking photos for many, many years and always loved it but it wasn't until I went digital that photography became more of an obsession with me. I think I have a good eye for composition; however, I also think I need to push my boundaries. Hopefully I'll do that here.

hey everyone...im Chad. i joined the forum to pretty much learn more about photography. im a beginner into the dslr world. mainly shooting sports such as mountain biking and landscape photos. i actually joined the forum because of its Nikon section. I plain on buying a Nikon D70 body, but have no idea about lens. because i dont know a whole lot about them. so hopefully, while i save money for the set-up, i can learn more and make the right choice.

Hey everyone!

I'm Aaron, I'm only in high school, and not really experienced at all in the field of photography, and all I have is a semi-decent digital camera I got as a present. But I absolutely love taking action shots at the beach and I love taking pictures of pretty landscapes.

I'm basically on here to get ideas on good cameras and equipment, and meet other people who love photography :)

Hi,

I just located this forum and have decided to give it a shot. The last photo forum I joined is basically a small bunch of snobs. The forum has a lot of talented photographers, but they know it too. :p I love the way this site is put together and it looks like it has a wide range of talent.

I used to shoot a lot of 35mm with Nikons but due to the quality of one hour photo labs, I got tired of it. I sold all my equipment a few years ago and just purchased an advanced compact point and shoot. It's going to take some practice to before I'm really comfortable with it but I believe the equipment is capable of some good shots. It's a Panasonic with 6mp resolution and a 12X optical zoom and IS. I just wish I lived in an area with more photo subjects that I prefer, which is mainly birds and all types of wildife.

Anyway, back to the interesting and educational topics.

Hi, my name is Brenda and I consider myself to be an intermediate level photographer...not bad, but have lots of room for improvement and have much to learn. I recently started college going for my degree in photography and am taking a beginning b & w film class at the moment and am really enjoying it and learning a lot. I have to say I am a digital girl at heart though. I found this site while doing a search for filters and it looked interesting. So I'm off to check out the rest of the site. I hope to post some of my pix soon.

Hi, I'm Lisa and am new to your site. Found it surfing for photography forums and digital photography info. I love photography (as my kids will attest.) I like mostly to take candids and portraits of people/children, but also enjoy sport photography. I'm presently trying to master swimming action photos with my D70 and new 18-200 VR lens. Your site is full of great info and I look forward to contributing.

Iaorana Ia Oe!

Hello to all, my 'murican name is Ken, but I prefer to go by my Tahitian name Maheanuu.

I am about 6 years older than Dirt, and am a retired Navy Chief, who spend his entire career in the WestPac fleet and bases. Did my twilight cruise in Pearl Harbor, and found myself immersed in the Polynesian Culture.. Did 6 and a half years there as a DJ on the local Hawaiian radio station KCCN and then went back working as a tech rep to the Navy until I met and married a Tahitian lady from the island of Raiatea...

I find myself at present in the USA as a care giver to my mother who is 89 years young, but when she is gone, I will be returning to "Paradise" and to my family, whom I miss more than I care to think about.

At present I have with me here in the USA, 2 Olympus OM 10's, a Minolta Maxxum 3Xi, a Canon AE1 all loaded and hanging on the wall just waiting for an emergency situation, or a friend who needs to use a camera in a pinch. All of these have a variety of extra glass for those special occasions......

I have 2 Nikon DSLR's, the D200 and the D70s, I started digital with a Minolta Dimage 7i, found that it ate AA cells faster than I could charge them and was incredibly noisy at low light conditions.. I have given that camera to my grandson so that he can get up to speed and then use one of the Nikons to further develop his abilities in Photography.

I have a large assortment of lenses, both automatic and manual that are all Nikon Mount but not necessarily Nikon Made...

I am stuck here in Oregon at present, but Tahiti is never out of mind....

Hope to interact with the members here, making new friends, exchanging photography knowledge, style of work etc.

Hey!
I'm Keith Charles
ummm... im from illinois and im 15 yrs old
ive always loved photography and next year im goin to take my first class for it.
Im also a big fan of film and videography.
im in the middle of making my first independant film!!!
The only reason that its independant is because i didnt want to pitch the movie to a producer, and i didnt want to pitch it to a producer because then i would only be acredited as a "writer" and i dont want that...
So yea... i need some help with the decision of getting a film camera or a video camera so if anyone can point me in the right direction to a forum do that plz... or u can just aim me... im on most of the time... Hyperbade2010

Hello everyone. I am very new to the board and trying my hand at learning photography again. I have taken a couple of classes over the years and absolutely loved it. I now have some time in my life to start devoting to learning my camera (Canon 20D) and figuring out photoshop. Hopefully over time I will have stuff to post here and y'all can help me learn and grow. My fave types of shots are night, nature, and macro type work.

I recently ordered but have not recieved a Pentax 100d super and a zoom lens. I have decided to go digital and use photo shop. I am a total newbie to photo shop and digital pics so I hope I can pick your brains from time to time. Thanks for having me.

Hello... this is my first post and hopefully I have done it correctly! I have enjoyed navigating through this site and reading all the wonderful posts. It looks like I should be able to get a lot of help with my pictures. Some two years ago I graduated from a Minolta Maxxum 7000, to what I currently use, a Nikon D70. I have found the process to be very rewarding for I can now shoot hundreds of pictures without having to worry about the expense of film processing. I mostly concentrate on sports photography... soccer to be specific, and an accassional picture or a hundred of my grandson and daughters. The biggest challenge I am facing at the moment is that most soccer games are played in the early evening (twilight at best) hours and my ability to navigate through the camera setting options has not been refined as of yet. I use a 70-300mm 4-5.6 lens but with low light, it's not very productive. I have recently purchased a 2x lens extender for daylight shots and it appears to have slowed my camera down. Most research tells me that the lens I need is going to cost me $6-7K... that's out of question.... Well, I'm hoping that with the help of the forums on this site, I can improve my picture qualities. Thanks for having me.!

Hello All!
I'm from Northern California (or at least that's where I hang my hat now!) and I've just made the jump to film photography. I like the connection between hands and media. First thing I saw was Alison's B&W night shots. Now that's what I'm talking about!
There is so much talent here, I can't wait to jump in!

Happy to jump in and introduce myself.
I am married mom with boys 10 and 16. I live in the most beautiful part of the US Oregon of course. Photography interest came after I started scrapbooking. Just want the best photos I can take with what I have. (Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 and Olympus Stylus 770 SW) Will upgrade once I figure out what I truly need. I take pics of family and friends and sincerely appreciate any and all feedback. I am here to learn and get better.

Thanks for sharing your photos with us. It is inspiring.

Hello to you all:) , hope you don't mind a UK'er slipping in the side door.

I like the amount of searchable info here and some of the posted/gallery pictures are just superb.

Regarding photographic equipment i am totally unbiased, as long as it's Minolta of course!:wink5: though I guess I'm gonna' have to bite the bullet and say Sony through gritted teeth sooner or later....................let's assume later ehh:) . Using 'the other name' just doesn't feel right after 40+ years with Minolta...............lol........

Anyway, I work long hours and post very little so I hope you have no objection to me hanging around in the background.

Hi my name is Joy and I am from the DC Metro area. I joined the forum a month or so ago but just figured out where I was supposed to introduce myself. I just got into photography a year ago after taking some pictures of kayakers at Great Falls. The pics were decent and I realized I enjoyed figuring out what my camera could do. I took a class at REI this summer, and have been obsessed ever since.

My current camera is a Canon Powershot A520, and I am probably going to purchase either a Canon PowerShot SX 100 IS or a PowerShot S3 IS in the next few days. This site has been a great resource and I have enjoyed practicing much of what I have learned. I am really glad to have joined the forum.

Hi everyone! I am Amanda, and I am fairly new to Photography. I never gave it much thought other than the rare special occasion as a kid, but then my then-fiance(now husband) bought an Olympus C740 and I got hooked! Something about being able to take countless pictures and never have to worry about running out of film. Then in '04 I had a kid, which was great inspiration. Had another one in January and that's what finally started me down the road to taking photography more seriously. I haven't had a chance to take any classes, or formal training, so I am seeing what I can learn from other photographers such as yourselves, and from books. I bought myself a Canon Powershot S3IS, which I love because of the swivel viewfinder.

I also lovelovelove Photoshop and photo editing. I have a lot of fun with it. I am also interested in what makes a photograph art, so I am heading off to explore that thread next.

I can't wait to learn from you guys and enjoy all your pictures!

Greetings,

My name is Bill. I live in extreme South Texas. As many beginning film users have done, I began with a Ptx K-1000. From there I moved up to the LX & owned several bodies, taking many excellent shots on those, even selling a few. When they got too expensive to repair, I made the switch to Canon EOS, owning a Rebel-Xs & an Elan 7e. I've now had my 30D for a couple months & thoroughly enjoy it. I hope to begin posting a few pics soon. I will mainly be hanging out in the Nature & Wildlife forum, and spending some time in the Canon one as well. I really like the forum and think it is an excellent way to gain new knowledge, and maybe share some of what I know.

Hi everyone my name is Dan aka Favre421 Go Packers LOL. I just found this site looks like what I've been wanting in a photography website. I've been in the hobbie on and off since about 1973 where my 1st camera was a Minolta XG1, great camera for 1st timers. I currently have a Minolta Maxxum 5xi with the standard lens and last winter I purchased a Canon powershot A710 which is a great p/s camera as Im learning. I also just yesturday puchased from Ebay a Minolta Maxxum 5 Date, which if the reviews are tru it's a good camera it comes with a 300mm zoom.

I like the Monolta cus thats what I started with and that's the 2 I alread have worked with take good photo's and are ez to operate.

I'm just getting back into the film side of things which I'm excited about becouse I think film you can experiment more with unless you buy a high end digital but since I'm married 2 kids and a mortage dont think that's gonna happen anytime soon LOL.

I really enjoy outdoor photography sunset/sunrises, lakes and steams and fall color's. Nature is a photographers palette. I am looking forward to also doing alot of black and white, there is an old barn just up the road from me and that's going to be my 1st b/w subject. I think black and white is old school and that's white I love about it.

Anyway I just wanted to say HI to everyone and am looking forward to chatting with everyone soon.

Thanks Dan.

Hi,

My name is Jodie. I've been taking pictures since I was about 9 years old when I got a little kodak instamatic (I literally have boxes and boxes of photos!) Despite the fact that I love taking pictures (and there have been several photographers in the family) I never got past the point and shoot ability with a camera till about eight months ago when I finally purchased a Kodak Z612. I absolutely love my digital camer!

So I look forward to learning and sharing ideas on this forum.

Hi Everybody, My name is Bruce, and I had actually joined this forum a couple years ago, but got busy with life and lost contact until a Moderator or somebody sent an email wishing me a happy birthday.
My Dad freelanced once upon a time long before I ever came along, and I freelanced much more recently shooting weddings & special events. My Dad is now gone, and I'm retired, but here is his old Watson 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 next to one of mine. The receipt for $63.86 for the camera from January 12, 1949 when he bought it new from Knights Camera in Los Angeles is next to it along with some of the accessories.

Hello all,

Pleased to make your virtual aquaintances.

My name's Lee and, long story short, I'm just getting back into photography after a six-year hiatus. My, how things have changed! Feelin' like Rip Van Winkle over here.

I recently took the megapixel plunge and purchased my first DSLR, which has brought with it copious doses of both exhilaration and frustration (emphasis on the latter). Talk about a steep learning curve; my rig should have come gift-boxed with climbing gear and an oxygen tank.

So I come in peace, just hoping to learn all I can and get some (constructive) feedback on the visual crimes I've been committing lately. Speaking of which, what is the best way to post photos here? Do most people post jpegs, gifs, or...? And similarly, are people posting RGB, indexed color...? How do you get maximum size and quality within the 244k requirement for this site?

I have tried posting a couple of photos today, but by the time I get 'em down to 244k in CS3, they're so small that it's difficult to really see all that's happening in the image. And converting to indexed color really seems to degrade the quality... Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,
Lee

HELLO from the very flat plains of Oklahoma!

My name is Jason...first started making photographs at the young age of 8 (36 now for the record). My father, an ex-pro and now avid amateur 'infected' me with the photography bug and its been with me ever since. While I did put down my cameras for several years through collegee. Now with a lil disposable income I am back at it. I shoot pretty much everything...digital to 4x5 film...though I admit I am a film junkie maintaining my own home darkroom.

Recently my new wife and I have been working on A TON of photography projects and have had some success selling a few prints here and there...not near ready to quit the day jobs but the print sales go a long way to funding new toys and trips. =)

Look forward to interacting with you all!

Hello to all from Northern Virginia. My name is Brian Folsom but most call me Tiny. I started shooting in 1991 with a loaner Pentax K-1000 in high school photography class. I haven't done much since then outside of having a point and shoot digital for the last 7 or so years. My wife wanted to get involved on a more serious level so I purchased her a Nikon D40X with a couple of lenses and I have been infected with the bug once again. I love the new camera and am now shopping for another Nikon body for myself. I have plans to get into sports photography mostly of my kids but hopefully of others and be able fund some of my equipment expenditures with my camera.

I look forward to sharing some photo's soon and will definitely enjoy viewing everyone else's work.

Hi! Name is Fred. New to the forum. I hope it's a friendly place and not like a few others I've looked at. Started taking photos at age 11 with a Brownie Hawkeye, spent three years as photographer in the Army, been a firefighter for 29 years and will retire in about 18 months. I am a dedicated Nikon user shooting with a D2X, D-200, F-100, and an F4. I also use 4x5 and med format so I have not gone 100% digital. I enjoy most aspects of photography but my favorites are candid people and wildlife. I'm colorblind so 90% of what I shoot is B&W. When I do color my wife, bless her heart, has to be there to help out or I come up with some really weird colors.

Looking forward to posting and meeting some new people.

Having just discovered this site, I am brand new to the forums. Having become frustrated with point-and-shoot digitals, I sold all of my 35mm Nikon stuff this year and bought a D80. So far, I only have the 18-200 lens for it, but love the combination. Other than taking snapshot-type photos, I have done no serious picture taking for the last 15+ years. I am really looking forward to getting back into photography.
I look forward to learning quite a bit, as I see that the amount of experience and talent on this forum is amazing!

Hello,

My name is Michael, and I am a 36 year old married, father of one precious 20 month old, and practicing Emergency Medicine.

I am an avid, some might even say, rabid, triathlete and cyclist, and actually found this place on the recommendation of several of my friends over on roadbikereview.com.

I have always had an interest in photography, I even took a class in HS, although, the teacher seemed much more interested in teaching and discussing film DEVELOPMENT, rather than actual shooting and composition skillz. I just recently made the jump to the dSLR technology, buying a Sony A100, which, so far, I am completely blown away by.

I tend to be sometimes a little blunt, so I hope that people understand that about me, but that's the way I'm built. Looking forward to reading, and more importantly learning.

Right now I'm into film photography, specifically B&W, and I use a Canon AE1 that was my grandfather's, which he gave me back when I first started taking photography classes. Hi Everybody..

I'm Lauryn and very new to all this digital stuff. I was lucky and got a Canon XT for Christmas last year..

I've been doing photography for 23 years, starting with an A1, EOS and now the XT. My main job is ringside photography for professional wrestling.. yes, professional wrestling. When I'm not ringside, I can be found in the locker room bandaging up these crazy guys.. My day job is at a hospital. I'm also a volunteer EMT and an EMT Instructor here in NJ.

I'm a little slow in understanding all the nuances of digital, but I'm getting there!

I just bought my first digital SLR, it's a Canon Rebel XT, as well!!. I love it already, although I've only had it 2 days. I played early Santa to myself; I deserved it. LOL

Although I know very little about photography I'm looking forward to become the best photographer I can be. I also look forward to meeting folks here.

Hi everyone. My name is Scott (aka Fally). I just got my first "serious" camera yesterday, a Nikon D80 and had to find a forum to join! So on the same day I got this camera, I signed up on this board.

I look forward to many learning experiences here and to reading tips and tricks on neat features of different cameras.

Happy New Year!

Hello Everyone,
My name is Robin.. I live in Texas.. I just got a Nikon D40 for Christmas and I love it!
I got it to take pictures of my son's basketball games, my family, and old churches..
I learn by doing, so It's taking some time to learn the camera and all of it's functions. Bear with me, when I read this site I feel like you all are speaking a foreign language.
I'll put up some pics soon for some expert advice..
Thanks

Hi. My name is Jerry and I hail from San Diego. I Took up photography as a serious hobby back in the 80's while attending college. Initially very disappointed with the images I got shooting negative film, then realized that I needed to shoot slide film to gain control over my images. :blush2:

Traveled to Asia, Mexico, and all over the Western United States with my faithful Nikon FE2 always at my side. Briefly owned a Leica M3 single stroke camera kit with the whole nine yards, only to realize that it wasn't practical for my needs, not to mention my economic circumstances!

Then a funny thing happened. I got married, settled down and lost my taste for lugging around my camera bag. I first bought a small Olympus point and shoot 35mm film camera, then moved onto digital point and shoot cameras. I now had convenience, but lost that passion for photography.

Just over a year ago, I was recruited to shoot with a Canon DSLR at a church retreat, since I was the guy with the most experience behind an SLR. Needless to say, I was reinfected with the bug!

I currently shoot a Nikon D40 for most everyday stuff. I also pack the old FE2 and a N90s film SLR cameras loaded with Velvia 50 slide film and Fuji 200 speed negatives. Funny thing is, I really enjoy the pace and process of shooting film more each day.

Oh, and I just don't enjoy shooting staged shots. I love catching the extraordinary that slips through the cracks of an ordinary day. Thankfully, there is plenty of it to go around.

I'm a car enthusiast at heart, and found photography to be a very close second. I'm on many car forums under the same name. I cant wait to explore the board and all the awesome pictures, learn all I can and share what I can. Thanks.

Hello
Found your forum by chance and have been lurking for a while. My father bought my first camera when I was 14.I took some pictures, developed b&w film and printed some photos, then for some reason lost interest a few years later. Well I picked up one of my brothers Nikons about five years ago, and fell in love all over again. I'm sure, from the looks of things around here, that there is plenty of knoledge to draw from. I just hope to put it to good use.

Hope to be around for a while and possibly even contribute to this informative sight.

Thanks Strick

I have "unstuck" it but it's right here (http://forums.photographyreview.com/showthread.php?t=39109) and also linked in the original post of this thread. Hello everyone.

My name is Jerry. I live in Chicago. I'm very new to photography, but after 2 years of cross-country motorcycle trips I really wanted to capture the amazing things I've seen.

I bought what I hope is enough gear to get me started properly, and just found this site today. (Tons of info BTW!!)

If anyone can think of anything else I'd need please don't hesitate to comment.

Canon Rebel EOS XTI
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens
1- 4G Ultra III CF card
2- 8G Ultra III CF card
Spare battery
Canon Speedlite 430EX
and a Lowepro SlingShot 200 AW Sling Bag to hold it all.

I'm headed to Hawaii next week, hopefully I'll have some nice images to share!

Hi Jerry, I think you have a nice selection of lenses to choose from there. One thing I notice though is you have some serious overlap in focal length between your EF-S 18-55 lens, and your EF 17-40 L glass. I would consider leaving the EF-S lens at home, and bring the "L" in it's place.
Enjoy your trip to Hawaii. :D

Hi Jerry,

Welcome to the boards! Looks like you've got an incredible setup there. I can't wait to see what you capture with it. The only things I would recommend are 1) a tripod if you're looking for maximum sharpness when time allows and 2) a circular polarizer to help bring out your skies.

Best of luck and welcome to the boards!

Thanks for the input Ballen Photo, and Walterick. I was considering the same thing RE: the lenses.

And Walterick, I neglected to mention I have UV and polarizer filters for all the lenses. How crucial is the tripod going to be? I'm trying to stay lightly packed.

Tripods are an absolute must for night or low-light photos (such as a Hawaiian sunset/sunrise). If you plan on only shooting outdoors during the day time, you can do without. I have a $20 Wal-mart tripod that is all-aluminum (light) and collapses down to a/b 1.5ft - it's not high quality, but it's light and it holds the camera still.

And it's great to have another rider on the board! I'm all offroad right now, though.

Personally, I'd say very crucial but that has a lot to do with my shooting style - and I don't know yours. So, it depends on what you're trying to do but if I had the choice I'd choose a tripod over another lens.

Welcome to the site!

My name is Al and I recently started taking photography seriously as a hobby. I'm outdoors a lot (e.g., kayaking, backpacking, hiking, rock climbing...), and figure it would be nice to start taking pictures of the places I go to on a decent camera instead of my p&s. Actually, I felt like I took semi-decent pics on my p&s, so I decided to move up to a dSLR.

Was reading through the forum, and it looks really active and friendly - so I decided to sign up.

Hi Pedro, and welcome! I hope you enjoy the forums and when the time comes I hope we can help you choose your new DSLR.

I do have some bad news for you however, Minolta has folded as a company and is no longer making new cameras. You still have plenty of options however as Sony, Olympus, Pentax, Canon and Nikon are all producing quality equipment. Good luck with your decision!

Hey everybody. I just bought a new Olympus E-510 (with the two lens kit) with help from reading this forum. All I really wanted was a new P&S to replace my old 2MP Kodak, but read up on DSLR's and realized I could get that kit for a bargain. I'll probably be asking a bunch of questions by next week. I've lived in St. Louis (which can be boring and lame) for all my life. I am considering moving to another state or country. (I've been day trading stocks for about 5 years and can take that "career" virtually anywhere.)

Anyway. I've already got some questions I need to post in the Olympus forum.

Hi and welcome! Actually, any place can be boring and lame. I've lived here for most of my life and a lot of times I think the same thing - but a friend who is a photographer comes to visit occasionally and sees all kinds of stuff to shoot right by my house. The trick is to look past "boring and lame" because I think the best chance for an excellent photograph will come from a place you can visit any day you want - not the once in a lifetime vacation halfway around the world. Check out some of the books by Freeman Patterson for some inspiration.

Hello PR. I am new to the forum thing, but not new to photography. I have used a 35MM Cannon for years and purchased a Nikon D50 about a year and a half ago. I am not a pro by no means, and don't even call myself very good. I am told, from time to time, I can take good photos. But even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. I don't have a lot of time as I work 2 full time jobs. But I do enjoy the time that I do have to spend with my Nikon.

I have been lurking around here for awhile and finally decided it was time to join in the fun. I was part of another forum, but I quickly got the impression that if you weren't packing a several thousand dollar camera or had your own website then you were clearly not up to their status!
I recently purchased a Nikon D40 ( complete compulsive purchase, wish I would have researched a little more) and am trying to become fluant in manual mode :) I would consider myself more of a snapshot kinda person, giving very little thought to settings and creative exposures...which is why I am here LOL! Hey Everybody!
I just found this forum. I love posting and reading photography forums and am a member of three others but sometimes I feel like a thread killer! lol
I am a Canon shooter and shoot mostly sports and my kids of course. I have been chasing NASCAR for about 4 years now and love it but also love Basketball, Football and Soccer. I am definitely looking for comments and suggestions on how to make my shots better. I never tire of learning and just when you think you have it, there is something to make it all better!

Hello I am amateur photograph since 1975. I mainly took pictures of our kids as they were growing up. I had a Minolta SLR until 5 years ago and then I move to a Canon G2 for documenting our vacation.

I will be retiring in March of 2009 and traveling through the USA. I am looking to buy a digital SLR to document our travels. I love digital photograph and I am ready to take the next step. I have been reading a lot of information on digital SLR's and I need input from experience photographer for amateur photographer.

I will be traveling in a 5th wheel camper to the Grand Canyon, northern California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Canada, Wyoming, Montana, South & North Dakota.

I will be looking for a serious digital SLR to document our travels. I hope to get unbiased information to determine by purchase.

Welcome Aspen!

Sounds like you're off for a great trip. I think any DSLR you buy these days is going to serve you well. The quality of each brand, even at the entry level, is excellent and will probably not let you down. A few questions you need to answer before you can make your choice however:

What am I going to do with my pictures? Post them on the web? Print them? If so, what size?

What types of subjects am I going to be shooting? Landscapes, on a tripod? Fast action wildlife?

These questions will help you and us pick the right camera for you. But, again I would venture a bet that you will be very happy with even the most basic DSLR, unless you have specific given needs that require a more advanced one. If your shooting does not require finer high iso or higher frames per second, then I might recommend you buy a basic camera and spend the extra money on a better (read: sharper and faster) lens, as that may be where you see the most improvement in your photos.

Also check the <a href="http://forums.photographyreview.com/showthread.php?t=108">DSLR buying guide</a> in our DSLR forum.

Good luck!

Rick,

I will be posting them on my web site, and showing them on TV. I my print some special shots, but since I will be traveling in a 5th wheel camper space is an issue.

My subjects will mainly be landscape and wild life.

It my be over kill, but I was looking at the Nikon D300 with a 18-200 lense. Because of the places we are going and the wildlife we will encounter, I feel I need a good camera. I realize I will be on a big leaning curve and it will take time. I plan on making photograph my hobby during retirement and it will allow me to document the places we will be traveling. Should I be looking at a more entry level camera.

"Should" is a bad word :)

I had the chance to shoot with the D300 for a couple of days a few months ago. It is an incredible camera. My only complaint is it was a very heavy camera for me, especially with a solid lens on it, like I believe the 18-200 is. You may want to take this into consideration before buying. The 18-200 I have not used but have seen pics from it and they seem amazing. It sounds like a great all-around choice for your traveling needs as well.

The D300 packs more than enough firepower for web posting and tv and will serve you well for both landscapes and wildlife. You can leave it on fully-automatic and it will take many good shots for you while you learn the ins and outs of the camera. If you get caught in the rain, the D300 may have better weather sealing than entry-level cameras. You can't go wrong with either lens or camera choice.

If there's anything else we can do, let us know.

My forum name is Norbert , it's a in joke with friends based on a "Viz" comic character Norbert Colon .
I've been doing photography off and on for 22 years . On Digital I use a Nikon Coolpix L2 , it's a toe in the water thing until I get all the film stuff digitalized on my Prime Film Scanner and get a Nikon D1X which will meter with my AIS Nikkors .
I use a Nikon FE which appears to have gone wrong after long trusty service , put that down to it's age .
My favourite Colour Trannie Films are Kodak Elite Extra Colour , Fuji Sensia , but my main passions B&W , which I'll carry on as a Luddite on film. I just like the quality and depth which you just can't get with digital.
Anyway I've had some luck with purchases off Ebay , some dodgy ones as well which goes with the scenery and enjoy working with my scans on my brilliant Apple Imac .
I'm 42 , male and live in Preston, Central Lancashire , England and would just like to say hello to all .

Hi, new here. I mainly take photo's of my kid and random family snapshots. I am looking to branch out and learn more. I used to manage a 1 hour photo lab and loved it. That's what got me in to photography. So my main project is to learn more to be able to take photo's that are just not snapshots.

Right now I have a point and shoot Canon A540. I love all the options on it. I have been looking at the G9, S5 IS or the SX100 IS. I wouldn't mind a DSLR, but maybe in a few years.

Hello to all,

I have just registered here. I am not new to photography, I have been a "hobbyist" for probably 25 years or so. My wife and I are planning a trip to France in September so I am refreshing and upgrading my equipment. I am using a Canon EOS Rebel. I have recently purchased a Canon 28-135 IS f3.5-4 lens, and a Sigma 17-35 f2.8-4 lens.

Next on my list is the following;

Manfrotto carbon fiber tri-pod
580 EX Flash
70- 200 or 300 Zoom lens
Lowepro Slingshot 200

I joined this forum because it looks like an excellent way to correspond with likeminded folks about the subject. (43,000 members I think...?...impressive!)

Anyways, I just wanted to get a post under my belt and an introduction. I am looking for a few ideas and if anyone can help in the following it would be very much appreciated.

A) how do I select Neutral Density Filters? What are the numbers for? What is appropriate for what conditions? and where is a good place to buy them?

B) Does anyone have experience with scanning their old photo collection? This is something that is on my list and when I started to research scanners, I got bogged down with alot of options, features and prices! My thinking is to spend the money on a good scanner (Epson V750-M Pro)...catalogue my photos and then re-sell the scanner to recover the cost. I thought about taking them in but to keep the cost down, the stores want all the pics at once and I really don't want to take that many albums apart all at once.

C) And last on this extremely long introduction is Photoshop. I would like to find some information on learning more about Photoshop. I am sure that there is a spot in this forum on the topic... I just have to find it.

If you have made it this far through my post... thanks for taking the time and my apologies for the length... I am working graveyard shift and trying to keep awake...hahaha.

Look forward to sharing ideas and pictures with you.

Jeff

Hi Jeff, you'll probably find more help for your questions in other forums here but I'll try to give you a quick start.

ND filters are rated by filter factor, or basically how dark they are. A 2x is one stop and a 4x is two stops. Check out the Singh-Ray variable ND filter which goes up to about 8x or 10x but it's quite expensive. Lots of fun though!

I think you're on the right track with a scanner if you're not going to shoot film anymore (buy it, use it, sell it) but there can be a fairly steep learning curve with scanning. The first few scans might take awhile to get right, but with any amount of automation it should go at least a little faster later. Best results of course would be from negatives or slides (not prints) and if you have slides you might check out a 35mm film scanner with a batch feeder accessory (Nikon has them). Expensive, but a huge time saver and will have a high resale value.

Photoshop is a constant learning process. Check out Scott Kelby's books for a great start (Adobe Photoshop {insert your version here} for Digital Photographers). Also look for the Digital Imaging forum on this site.

Hi I am new here and very excited to learn as much as I can about photography. I have always loved photography. About 5months ago my husband bought me the Canon Rebel XTi(i LOVE this camera) and my interest in taking pictures has become a complete obsession. I am driving my family crazy especially my kids. They are my models. My two youngest(twins)will be starting school soon and I would love to be able to make a little money on the side doing portraits(my favorites are outside portraits). I have been asked recently to take pictures at a big birthday party but I turned it down(i know not smart) but I felt like the job was to big for me. I really need more practice and knowledge. I was SO flattered though. We have a building that has 3 suites that I could actually have a studio in but I want to learn more before I start up a buisness SO I am here to learn, get feedback about my pictures. I am looking forward to seeing awesom pictures from you all, learning from you all.

Hello, I just found your message board and so far I've really enjoyed looking at the pictures posted here.

I got my first digital camera about 5 years ago. It was a Kodak Easy Share 2.1 MP. Look how far technology has come since then! After that I got a Canon SD600 but my new Kodak M1033 just arrived early this week. I love this camera. One of the reasons I chose it was because of it's compact size. I also liked the idea that it takes HD photos and video. I've been going camera happy all week!

I take pictures just for fun but it's fastly becoming my favorite hobby.

I just came back from the dunes where I took an awful lot of pictures and I'm anxious to download them to the comptuer and see them.

Hi everyone,

My name is Erik and I've been an amatuer photographer since I was about 12 years old. That is too many years ago. Let's just say that was sometime in the 70s. I used to use a 35mm but was given a decent Canon point and shoot as a wedding present 6 years ago and have been using point and shoot digitals ever since. I'd like to think I've taken some decent shots but I've probably taken twice as many bad ones.

I now find myself in the position of being able to justify buying a D-SLR for my side business. In my "spare time" I manage a trade association and we're holding our annual conference next month. I big part of what I do at the conference, besides making sure everything runs smoothly, is taking photos so everyone can look at themselves after the conference and feel all warm and fuzzy. I also produce print advertising and am usually stuck using stock photos most of the time. I'd like to be able to build up an image library of interesting shots.

Anyway, that's why I'm here. I've read a lot of the posts already and will continue to read for a while but don't be surprised to see me starting one of those "Need help choosing a camera" threads sometime in the very near future.
