What free or not relatively low cost monitor calibration software would you recommend for use with a laptop LCD screen (Adobe Gamma is not applicable here), and where can it be downloaded?

Hi Omega, try this site. It's called "Monitor Calibration Wizard v 2.0" http://www.hex2bit.com/ (http://www.hex2bit.com/) I've been using it for a while and while it's not as good as a "hardware" tool, it at least allows you to make some adjustments to get closer to what it should be.
Hope this helps a bit.

If you are not investing in a hardware device to calibrate you may want to read this review at Photo Review about Perfect-Pixs.
