After not having been around for a couple of months, I've now been reading everyday here, catching up on lots of older posts, making lots of notes.

I've noticed several posts refer to the * button for better and faster focusing. What I can't figure out is if this is something that is a Canon only feature or if my D-70 will have something like it as well. It sounds like, for shooting at the race track, this might be helpful.

It's apart of the Canon custom functions. I think I heard that Nikon Pro bodies have something similar but not certain on that.

My D2H has an AF-ON button at both horizonal and vertical shutter release points. As for the D70 no button.

OK, apparently Nikon has no way to move the button off the shutter then.

I have my custom function button set to lock the focus. I like the focus to operate via the shutter release. But I like to always have the camera on AI-Servo. If I want to lock the focus on something I just hold down the * button. I do that for race starts or when I've chosen a particular spot to prefocus on. But as soon as I get the prefocused shot I can take my thumb off the * button and I'm back on AI Servo. It works great for my style of shooting. I''ve had all my cameras set like this since I bought my EOS 3 in 1999.
