View Full Version : Costa's Hummingbird did not do this. Knight 04-13-2006, 03:01 PM Imagine my suprise when i drove up this side road today . This is what i call total tree destruction. Now if i can get a shot of getting a picture of this monster :) OBie 04-13-2006, 03:21 PM Holy Cow! That was one hungry woodpecker(?). That tree must have been chock full of bugs and goodies! paulnj 04-13-2006, 03:34 PM What did that? I know, but do you :) That tree was dead already, which is why insects(ants mostlikely) were living in it .That BTW is either the work of atleast 2 or has been worked for a good while. Knight 04-13-2006, 05:04 PM Yes i know being a Power Lineman this bird gives quite a bit of work every year . They have a nasty habit of choosing the biggest hydro poles around to make nest`s in lol So my guess is a hungry overweight Pileated Woodpecker :) paulnj 04-13-2006, 05:25 PM Well, most of that is pileated but others feed there also. That tree is beyond dead as it's very punky looking. The tree looks like an oak, though it may be a maple, and I assure you that it's been dead for years :) People actually remove dead trees then complain about WP damage on the house ! Hahaha, leave those dead trees for habitat and a food source and they will leave your home alone beside drumming to attract a mate(usually) Leaving trees like this is a very enviromentally consious choice to make, though that close to a road is not too safe depending on the lean of the tree ;) |
