I am drawn to this image and find it very appealing, but I'm convinced that it is just too plain to be attractive to anyone other than myself.
Anyway, comments appreciated.
Thanks

Gary,

This is quite simplistic but I rather like it. I think that the right side is superbly framed. I am more or less comfortable with the gap on the left side. You can't get rid of it without cuting the ramp so I guess that I would let more space on that side (assuming that it can be done).

The tones are neat as usual.

Gary,

This is a very well executed photo. The composition and exposure are fantastic. The tones are great. And the subject has intrinsic intrest as well as being well presented. It evokes emotion and thought. (The shadows are wonderful, BTW!)

Gary,
Like all your photos, this one is also captured very well. The contrast is spot on in my monitor. I also like the hint of colour and the tones.

BUT having said that, the scene itself doesn't do anything for me.

Basically, love how it was captured, but not what was captured.

You have a knack in making ordinary scenes look very attractive in the lovely way you capture them, in this one the scene was just a bit too boring even for your talents IMO.

What I like about it Gary are the little things.
The, much in need of a coat of paint, door, the shovel and pots on the steps, the half open blinds giving us sight of the lamps inside. The vertical window grilles and iron fence, plus the shovel again give relief from all the horizontal cladding. There are also some nice soft diagonal shadows.
So while it is a basically simple shot (the best usually are) there is lots to see.
There is charm here and a nice summery feel (due to the subtle tone) also. I can easily see why you are drawn to it.

Gary,

Great shot imo. The black and white tones are splendous and I think it portrays a very unique lifestyle (ie. an urban dwelling). The fading paint, the framed tree all equates to a wonderful shot!

Nice shot,

Jared

At first, I thought the left side was too empty. I kept trying to imagine a bike there or something.

But the more I looked, the more I found. I especially like the shovel and the trash can lid. Those two elements made the image IMO. The composition is great.

I had to look at this a few times before trying to get a sense for that left side. It bothered me at first, but now I think it is just fine. I agree with what others have said that at first glance it is quite simplistic, but then your eyes move about the scene looking at all the little things that may be key to figure out who the person(s) are that live there.

Thanks all for the comments.
Seb . . .glad you mentiomned the tones. The simplicity and yet subtle nuances of the scene attracted me to it.

Marty . . .I'm very pleased to know you see the things in this that I do, and thought that only i would because it was my photo. thanks for the comments

Liban. . .I totally understand your view. I have viewed photos that did nothing for me , personally, but I could appreciate the execution. Thanks for the good words on my technique, and, I very much appreciate your honesty. Thank you. Actually, I kinda thought this was how most people were going to see this.

Tom. . .thanks for the great analysis. I also liked the lamps in the half drawn blinds windows. when i came across this house, I thought, this is so plain and simple but why am I so attracted to it. It was all the little things as you point out that somehow come together in a harmonious order of disorder. It looked to be such a pleasant little home, but then the bars on the window remind one of where it may be and what might surround it. The tree on the right, the garbage cover on the ground, the pots on the steps and the shovel, the plants in barrels behind the prison-like gates. . it just looked to perfect to pass on. Glad you see something in this too.

Jared. . .nice to see you back. Thanks for your points on this. I'm happy it works for you as well.

loupey. . . Great, thanks for the good words. I'm very encouraged by the response for this image, and it may put my worries about including it in the series to rest.

Rebekah . . .thanks for the response. Yes, that left side seems light compared to the weighted right side with the tree. The space I feel was essential in bringing a sense of place and breathing room , and I also felt it was important to show that the house was not attached to anything else on the side.

Hi Gary,

There is absolutely nothing technically that I can comment on. Great choice in toning and value. The composition is very rectangular, which leads to comments like "simplistic". And, it is simplistic.

What I think is impressive on the artistic side is that your composition follows this simple geometric theme -- yet, it does so even though there are many elements at play. Nice job here.

Cheers,
Tim

Gary,

I think all the techy stuffs been said.

I feel there is something missing and it doesn't quite do it for me. Perhaps a dog or cat on the doorstep would have added that extra bit that would have caught my attention.

I'm not convinced of the dustbin lid on the pavement either. However I can see what grabbed your attention.
