I just ordered a new eye piece for my camera because the rubber on the old one broke off.

i'm just wondering how much better this one is, because it has a thicker rubber part, and what seems to be a magnifying glass on it.
Does anyone have this? how is it? thanks. ;-)

The extended is NOT a replacement for the oiriginal rubber eyepiece.
It is an extension that stands out from the rear of the camers, rather like the arrangement on the 1D (pro) bodies ut unfortunately also reduces the size of the image a bit (as if it is't small enough already ont he 20D).
I've got one, it makes the camera far more comfortable getting my nose in (and no it's not a big nose) without having to turn my head looking into the finder.
Disadvantage is that it doesn't clip the rubber eyepiece as well as the body clip does, and so the rubber protective piece tends to come off ad get lost as a result.
I've boutght three replacement rubber eyepieces since I fitted the extender :(
But since I keep buying them - I must be convinced the extender is useful :)

I've got one also. I don't use it as much as I thought I would. As Paul mentioned, it makes the image very small in the viewfinder. Plus, if you have a tight fitting camera bag, you may find that the extender keeps popping off like mine.
I only use mine when shooting at very awkward positions when I can't get close enough to the camera (like a camera very near the ground).
But if you wear glasses or don't like to keep the camera tight against your face, then it may work for you.

would it be possible to cut the magnifying glass out? make a rectangular hole all the way through so it looks just like the original, but keeps you farther away from the cam?
could the rubber piece be removed and put on the stock eye piece to give you the extra distance between cam and face, without the mag. having to be removed?

Well, you did it now. I had to get up off this comfy recliner at this wee hour (I'm in the same time zone as you) and go off rootin' around for the dang thing. I've got it in my hands, except when I'm typing.
Being an engineer, I suppose you could dismantle it completely (only two phillips screws). But then why not save $18 and just hold the camera further away?
As for the "rubber part": sorry, it doesn't come with that. It is just an extender and Canon assumes that you will take the rubber thing off the camera and mount it to this thingy. Extra charge for another one.

Sounds like what you want might be an eye cup, that stands out a bit further than the normal rubber cushion, but doesn't have the lens in.
The problem is that the optics in the viewfinder are designed to work with your eye at the right distance from the camera. Move further back and it won't be in focus, that's why the lens is there in the extender.

I'll see how it is when I get it. I'm still young, being 16, so my eyes are probably good enough to see a smaller view finder. I'm just looking for more space between the eyepiece and the lcd. Any other alternatives to this that would make the view finder larger?

I sometimes hold the camera over my head and trip the shutter. Works great in crowds and on rollercoasters!
I'd wait until your package arrives. It may be everything you expected.

oh it is, i like it, lol... it keeps plenty of distance, without the rubber piece too, my dad is picking up a new rubber piece later on..
i dont find it to be too small, i like it, lol.. its still larger than my old p&s view finder, lol...
if I decide i cant use it for one shot, its not hard to pop off...
