I'm looking at the D50 with lenes. Like 18-50,18-70,28-200,55-200 or something else I don't know what to get. i have a little girl so i would take pics of her playing, running around, swinging, swimming you know what a year and a half old does. On other hand I also want to take pics of my wife playing soccer and get some good action shots, and lets not forget the dog and ladscape, so some help would be great any input will help.

Thanks to all,

Hampton

The D50 has gotten some phenomenal reviews. I shoot with a D70 and most of the reviewers say that the D50, while maybe not having EVERY bell and whistle the D70 has, gives it a run for the money.

The images I have seen have been great. As for freezing, if you understand shutter speeds and apertures, you'll be fine!

As far as the lenses go, you are going to be the best judge. If you have an 18-70, you don't need an 18-50 if you're just starting out. And with a 28-200, you probably don't need the 55-200. That said, you need to keep in mind that different lenses are of different quality. I had a Nikon 75-240 that I loved. I have a Nikon 70-300 that I think simply sucks! But the 75-300 is awesome!

Best bet, if you can, is to go out and rent the lenses and take them on a test run. See what works best. Just try to cover a gamut: You want wider lenses for your landscapes, medium range for more intimate shots, and longer lenses for when your baby is way out in the field, or when you want something more candid, etc. Obviously, since lenses are so expensive, you want to make the right choice for your situation and budget, but I think this is the best way to make sure you are getting what you want.
Just my opinion, of course!

I looked at a friend's D50+18-55 last weekend and reviewed her first 200 pictures. It appears to be almost identical to my D70 except:

1. There's no front knurled wheel o the D50 (not important if you're not used to it)
2. JPG's on the D50 look better than the ones from the D70 (which had a tendency to make them a little dark that was fixed on the D50 & D70S)

The 18-55 feels okay even if it is plastic. Personally I would go for the kit.

I think that your first accessory purchase should be an SB600 flash, even before getting a second lens. Digital sensors need help in overcoming difficult light conditions and the i-TTL flash system on the D50 etc. is designed to do just that. However the built-in flash on the D50 only goes out to about 6 feet. I cannot imagine doing pictures of interiors or people without having a decent flashgun handy.
