or do I have to convert them to TIFF before I use them? Just got a D70, no experience using any kind of photo editing software. It'll be a couple of months until I can afford it, just wondering. . .

NEF is listed in Photoshop CS as a RAW file it can open, so based on that I would say "Yes"

That's the one big advantage with the latest version of Photoshop, CS. Anything else - including Elements - and you would have to convert to TIFF first.

BTW, sign up for one class at a community college and you can buy an educational version of the software (same thing) for half price or less...
