Since a Photo of the Year contest idea has come up on the main board, I thought I would bring up a similar idea on this board. Since most of us don't post our sports photos in the Photo Critique section, one of our images can easily be passed over. So I propose this - a Sports Photo of the Year Contest.

The rules will be (roughly) as follows:
1. The Contest is open to any member of the PR boards. Each member will be allowed to vote for their top 2 photos.
2. Each member may submit one photo that is a sports/action photograph.
3. Each photo must have been taken during 2005.
4. Photos must have a minimum amount of alterations. Submitters may crop, sharpen, and correct for color.

We'll need to find a member to volunteer to run this contest, and we'll also need to set up a site where people can go to view the contest photos (without seeing who the photographer is). Submissions would be by email, and the contest administrator would be the only one who knows who each submission belongs to.

What do you guys think of this idea?

I think that would be Photo Johns call. Personally I steer clear of contests.

I suppose it would be PJ's call. However, it was just a suggestion since we tend to be a slightly more closed group when it comes to posting our photos.

This contest would probably just be for bragging rights (and something you can put on your fliers/resume/advertisements).

I agree sports gets the unwanted child syndrome in things like this...however, I think we already have a winner...Photo Johns recent mountaintop shot is a killer shot and should win easily. :D

I just never got into competitions, other than on the field or ice rink.

I would see it perhaps as a section (best of each forum?) in the main photo of the year review.
We must have some sport photos in the photo of the week archive !

Sports in general may be too broad a category. The majority of the members on this forum tend to lean towards motor sports/mountain biking, soccer and football. Those of us who would put up photos for other sports I think would tend to get overlooked. Some of us don't shoot those I just mentioned. People have particular interests, and tend to gravitate to those photos that jibe with their passion for whatever sport they prefer. I would prefer separate categories for the particular sports in which photos are submitted. Otherwise I think you're going to have 35 or 40 contest submissions at one end of the spectrum and 4 or 5 at the other. JMHO. ;)

That's true, swmdray. We'd almost have to run a sports photo contest every other month to get everyone's tastes.

I don't think we have to limit the main Photo of the Year "contest" to Photo Critique and Gallery images. But like I said in the ViewFinder thread, the Featured Photo Archive is a good place to start.

As for my photos winning anything, I'm disqualified. And for what it's worth, I plan to add Featured Photos to the sports and nature forums, too. But you guys should all use the gallery as well as posting here. The gallery is a better long-term place to share and store photos. The forums are good for discussion, but everything gets buried. In the gallery you can always pull up your photos, edit your gallery, and use it as a real portfolio.
