Some pictures from tonight's basketball game. My college's team got ahead early and never let up, and in the end, they won by over 30 points and the entire bench got playing time. That makes my job easy since I have to start getting pictures for next year's media guide.

This is only the first batch of photos. I'll probably post some more tomorrow.

I really like that first shot! He looks like he's making a face at you instead of playing basketball. Good job!

Thanks, JS and jorgemonkey.

This is the first time that I've almost had someone land on me during a game. The only good spots for me to shoot are on the baseline and above the action, and I like the view I get while being on the same level of the players. After I took the second shot, #5 stepped on my foot/ankle trying to avoid me. Better that than landing on me, I suppose.

Is that what the coach was laughing about? lol, I almost got creamed twice last week, once by a girl....about half my size...and thats pretty small.

The girls can hit pretty hard when they run into you, which is why I'm glad the basketball games at my school are very low intensity.

How do the colors look in these shots? I tried playing around with the contrast and saturation. They look good on my monitor, but I haven't calibrated it yet.

From what I see the color diffrences are due to light differences. The bottom shot appears a bit dark on the colors...just my opinion though.

I am new to taking indoor pics of highschool basketball/Vollyball.Trying to get info.on proper lighting. Is a flash needed? What are the distance limitations of flash units?? Are they needed?Or could you use a lower ISO film with the lighting supplied?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks, JS. I was worried that I might have oversaturated or altered the colors.

Af, it greatly depends on the location you're shooting at. Some locations have excellent lighting that allow you to shoot without a flash while others are like dungeons or caves. The gym I normally shoot at allows me to get a shutter speed of around 1/500th to 1/640th with an apeture of f/2.8 at ISO 800 and a color temperature of 4000K.

I've never used a flash while shooting sports, so I can't help you with those. Perhaps another member will be able to help you with that.

RE: Flash

It depends on a lot of things:
1: your camera and lens choice(s) an f2.8 lens is best
2: the sport
3: the lighting
4: the rules

not in that order but all will help decide what you do or do not do. #4 is important as some state athletic organizations regulate if you use flash or not. In many cases they will allow strobes where they won't allow camera mounted flash.
Sports here that do NOT permit flash are:
Volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, wrestling
With that said, sometimes you can ask BOTH coaches if you can use flash or not.

In most cases, if you have a good camera and a f2.8 lens you won't need flash for most shots. Just make sure your White Balance (WB) is set properly so colors look right.

actually, a pair of a 70-200 2.8 zoom and a 1.8 or 1.4 prime is the best.
