View Full Version : The Forgotten Girl... a series

All shot at slow shutters, in my usual fashion - I did some desaturation and saturation in various areas.

So the story of this shoot is about the forgotten girl, she's ignored to the point where she starts to fade away, she's not allowed in, she's slowly going insane and fades to nothing...

Thanks - this is my usual style - dark and ominous. I've been working on a series about fears for the past year - hers was the fear of being forgotten or ignored, like in school.

Wow. You did a great job of showing fear of being alone.

I really like the settings, lighting and textures, (especially the textures) they add greatly to the feel of your shots.

Hello Janie,

These are clearly Janie style. I really like them. I also like the care taken in the choice of the backgrounds. Actually, where were they shot??? Spooky stuff, in a good way!

Very wonderfully done. You have definitely set the mood you wanted. All of them are very nice, but I think it's number that is my favorite. Very ghostly indeed.

There's a real feeling of depression or hopelessness in the head and shoulders down poses. I like better the strength showing through in the pics where she seems to be facing the fears and going on through the tough parts.

Great series! The only one that didn't really grab me is the one with the teeth. I think it's because while the others evoked a feeling of compassion, that one was scary because she seemed to be in a rage. Which in itself is quite a powerful image then. I'd love to see the rest of your work.

Hi,
Most of the images give an evil feeling to me. The post processing of the eyes to white enhances that feeling to me. Well done!

The series above was about the fear of being alone, forgotten - she's ignored, not let in to anyplace or anything, slowly starts to go mad, then totally insane, then she just gives up and fades away.

It's all part of my darkness series - this was actually taken at the same place but in the spring, when the light was softer, as part of the fear of letting people in - the walls go up and she develops a dark side...

Janie,

I totally dig the series. Very gothic and, I think it's already been mentioned, creepy. Your textures, lighting and angles are in line with these feelings and certainly play your concept and background up to the hilt.
Do you read Weird New Jersey magazines to get your locations or is this somewhere known to you? I understand NJ has many abandoned factories and asylums that make for amazing background scenes like this.
Nice work!

I particularly like the one that is tilted. The way she is reaching for the door makes it feel like she has been shut out.

Ok, I missed the insanity part. Very cool. And I like the others as well.

Very effective indeed. A very threatening environment indeed. I would enjoy them a little more if the model did not show such awareness of the camera being present in some of the shots; this detracts from the "forgotten girl" idea for me anyway.

Weird New Jersey? This is so neat!! I didn't knew that it even existed. I gave a look at their website and it turns out that they also have guides related to few other states. This could come handy to me for my next trip in the US...

Thanks for the reference!

Great shots...they remind me a lot of Floria Sigismondi's work.

You are welcome!
I know there are a couple others out there too. I found out about them when I was researching background history for my abandoned Staten Island Ferry image (the Mary Murray). Also check out www.abandonednj.com for more interesting locations.

This shoot was at Sandy Hook beach at the Gunnison Battery behind a really tall wall, so no one really knows it's there. There are cooler parts but most of it is closed down now where I used to shoot:

The whole concept of having so detailled informations on abandoned sites, weird stuff and the like is quite fascinating for me. I am unaware of anything similar for areas in Canada.
