View Full Version : The D200 Has Arrived
Speed 11-10-2005, 04:52 AM 10.2 megapixels, 5 frames per second, 1005 pixel 3D Color Matrix Metering II sensor, and it has ISO 100. Looks like a winner to me.

BTW, I didn't buy a D70 today Rick! (But I'm planning on how I can buy one.)

another view 11-10-2005, 04:59 AM Looks like they did a good job with one, but they're not on the shelves yet and I haven't come across any reviews of a real production model. Photo-John did post this in News & Rumors - it came out about a week ago...

So you're saying I'm a day late and a dollar short - again!
Like you, I'm eager to read the reviews.

Old Timer 11-10-2005, 06:08 AM I'm very interested in seeing some real life reviews on this camera. I like what I have heard so far lets see if some of Nikon on going issues with digital are addressed here.

What on going issues with digital is Nikon having?
My experience with Nikon digital is the Coolpix series (800, 3500, 5700) and I haven't had any issues with them. And I do foresee a D70 or D70s in my future. If I win the lottery, I'll get the D2X! ;-)
So please enlighten me, my friend.
Photo-John 11-10-2005, 12:32 PM Check the D200 press release post in the News and Rumors forum. There's a good discussion about Nikon's digital SLR strategy in there. You might also check the Digital SLR forum and post a question there. If you like the Nikon stuff, then I think the D200 is looking like a really great camera.

My biggest gripe with Nikon is the noise problem. I love the D2H it is a great tool for sports, but once I go above about 800 the noise is terrible. I don't see the same problem with the Cannon at 1600 or even 3200 on some of the low light sports shots that I see posted.
another view 11-10-2005, 01:56 PM The noise kept me from really thinking too much about the D2H. I could live with the 4mp and would love to have a great viewfinder again, but high ISO noise matters a lot to me. I've seen pretty clean ISO1600 shots from a D70, but I'm not sure what post processing was done. The D2X looks good at 800, but so does my now fairly old Fuji S2.
Think I'll sit this one out, but I'm sure it's just what a lot of people are looking for. Just looking at the product shots of it, it looks like the viewfinder won't be much bigger/brighter, but that remains to be seen because no one has their hands on one yet. It does have a spot meter and i-TTL though. ;)

i checked that out on dp. Boy does it look sexy! It looks like a big D70, a camera which I also think is very nice looking. 10MP ain't so bad either. I can't wait to try one out at Ritz.

I think I'd definately stay with the 1D MKII N...I'll take 8.5 frames per second at 8MB over 5 frames at 10.2MB, and I'd take 45 AF points over 11.
This camera doesn't seem like much of a jump for even Nikon, and from reports I have heard it can't compete with the 1D series or the 5D.
It almost appears that Nikon just came up with something quick to try and have something new for holidays. I just hope they don't have the return problems they have had in the past with other models....I'm tired of loaning my Canon gear to Nikon users who have to ship them off to get this or that fixed...like the metering problems. Now, if these guys would just pay me for using my gear....

another view 11-14-2005, 05:09 AM The D200 isn't a sports camera and isn't going to compare with a 1D series Canon. Look at the D2Hs or D2X - they're more of a comparison. The D200 is also about $1700, compared to what, about $4k for a 1D Mark II?
I'm not defending the D200 - I have no plans in buying it and have nothing to do with the company. It's just not a good comparison, that's all. The D200 is a lot closer competition for the 20D.

As usual, you are on top of things!

Ahhh. That's understandable. On the Coolpix 5700, ISO 100 and 200 look good, and 400 is OK, but 800 is terrible. So I don't use ISO 800.
Thanks for the info my friend!
