cape barren goose, peafowl(since they are male... peacock) and an emu ;)

Now that we have our own forum, you can also post in your own thread if you'd like. WHEN this thread gets too big(like the original), we will start a new one before it gets errors.

I don't remember seeing this one in the original thread, but I could have missed it. Taken right here in SW Wisconsin.

Poor image quality, but I like the reflection.

He is getting pretty deep there, so it looks! I actually took a series of images of one swimming(they don't swim either) . It tried to land on what it thought was land, but it was actually heavy weeds. Once it was caught , it flopped around swimming for 300 feet until it got back to land ;)

That was quite a sight to watch.

I photographed these birds in St. Louis a few days ago when the sun was going down. There was a flock of them. What are they?

Do you want to move the original thread over to this forum, too?

paulnj
10-29-2005, 07:17 PM
The DEMONS of the avian word!

They are european starlings and I apsolutely hate them! They are nasty(like house sparrows) and are driving redheaded woodpeckers(amoung others) from their nest holes.

Since they nest earlier than other birds, they get there first and take over. The redheaded woodpecker is on the threatened list(if not endangered) in NJ due to them and developing.

paulnj
10-29-2005, 07:21 PM
Yeah I will move it once I get PJ to split it into atleast 2 pieces. That thread only works (due to size) when the server load is very low.

BTW.....

congrats on making 1K :)

Are you joking ? Give me a location of the nest( looks like an over hang, but is it near water.....) and I will give you a few birds it could be.

Seems it is mostlikely a eastern pheobe nest from my experience, but it would be close to water. Alsp mourning doves and robins nest anywhere too ;)

Well, you do have the right answer in your reply. The nest is sitting on top of a porch light on the back of a cabin we rented in northern WI. There is a lake about 50 yards from the cabin.

Here's another bird from Florida, I only had my 200mm lens with me so I had to crop this a bit. I wasn't planning on doing any birding down in Florida but I wish I had put my 2x extender in the bag, I won't make that mistake again.

The area I was in was pretty built up but I saw on a map a state park on the gulf so I took a short ride there. It was called Honeymoon Island State Park and in the park was a nature trail named The Osprey Trail and this was a very accurate name. There were several nests not far from the trail and many Osprey flying around. Here's one of the ones I was pretty close to.
Mike

ps. since I named the bird how about IDing its meal

paulnj
11-03-2005, 07:43 PM
Well..... only a redtailed hawk "kites" like that ;)

Hawks in general are secretive in nature(as are most wild animals), so getting close will take patience and a bit of luck ;)

My suggestion is the approach B moose Peterson used in the beginning in his camaro..... drive around and watch ahead. KILL the engine and coast up to your subject while still being innn you mobile blind :) It does work sometimes on perched hawks.

Another way(my favorite) is to find a hillside clearing and wait for the area hawks to come by. KNOWING your subject( it's habits, flight pattern, favorite perches, hunting grounds...) is just as important in wildlife as it is in sports :)

JSPhoto
11-03-2005, 07:58 PM
I knew you'd get it... :) lol, even with that bad shot. It was a 100% crop of a raw file from the 28-300mm lens, so it was about 390mm (1.3 on the MKII N sensor). The woods where they live are very small, maybe 8 acres at most. No hills as such, Indiana is flat, and this area is all corn/soybean fields.
I guess I'll just have to spend some time waiting on them to see where they go and when. The guy says there may be as many as 5 of them.

JS

paulnj
11-03-2005, 08:18 PM
Well..... they are migrating right now, but very well may stay in your area(some stay here year round)

Since you have corn/soy field, you WILL get harriers and roughlegged hawks wintering if the conditions are right. Also if the fields are VAST enough, many hundreds of acres , you may get short eared owls this winter hunting as the sun drops low ;)

Chinook Mines in Clay County Indiana in december/ january will give you a good chance at all 3 species ;) I love google !

Hmmm, Interesting... I have been looking for somewhere to go. I never heard of Chinhook Mines before...I'll look that up! I had heard that Patoka Lake in Southern Indiana has Bald Eagles, and in February they have a big deal there and a day for spotting them where a lot of people show up. It's on the Indiana DNR site for Patoka Lake and C52 website which is a site for a captive Bald Eagle. This Bald Eagle was born with a defect in its wing (s) and cannot fly.
C52's Website: http://www.in.gov/dnr/c52/HowToSpot.html

In the years I have lived in Indiana I saw one owl, twice, two days apart. This past summer I had one in my back yard but could not find it. I also have woodpeckers that I cannot find no matter what I do. I see their holes though! I have pine trees in front and in back of my property, and behind that is a 17 acre field (corn this year), across the street is a 324 acre farm field as well. I'm out in farm country, for maybe 5 more years, then the developements will be here too  .

Thanks for the info Paul, I'll check it out!

Thanks for the homework Paul. This will give me a chance to test out my new bird book. I did get the Smithsonian book I was asking about in my other thread from earlier this week. Only bad thing with this assignment is that now I'm afraid to read the rest of the posts in this thread because I don't want any help IDing this bird. :)

Without going through the whole thread and ruining my chances, I would say on first guess that it is a Coopers Hawk.

Well february is the beginning of nesting season for raptors ;), which is why they do it then. Great horned owls fledge from the nest in may, while some eaglecmay fledge as late as early july(unless in FL where they double clutch at times). If you have open water in your area in winter(lakes, big rivers... DAM OVERFLOWS!!) You should be able to find an eagle there if fishing is good) I go to the hudson river NYC parks, Rio res. near port jervis NY and the Conawingo dam in maryland to see eagles in winter(if time permits) I usually can find 30 + in a day in NY and 30-150 in maryland if conditions are right)

Images from FL are quite easy to get compared to the REAL WORLD ;)

Here is a young owl that was learning to fly, it landed next to our house. Mom was watching VERY close as I took the picture. They have moved on now, there was two babies and two parents, they left after one of the babies was killed by a power line. :(

Yep, it is a Great Horned, I tried to get good pics of the mom but I didn't have a good camera then.
The Mallard is actually wild, it was in a lake by a park that we were visiting. There was a bunch of them swimming with seagulls.

Can you tell what this is, Paul? I was very happy to see him, but he happened by when I had my camera set for something totally different. Still in all, I kinda like it.

haliaeetus leucocephalus !!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember my first wild one was a great feeling!!!!

No fair on the stooping eagle shot with a osprey look to the wings! The angle to the first makes the wings look narrower too!!!!

Since you're the moderator, you can always delete your "mistake" :D .

Here's an Osprey I was very pleased with. I spent an hour or more each day this week out in the woods and was really pleased with some of what I got: Yellow-Rumped Warblers everywhere, Catbirds, Blue Jays, and Kingfishers I still can't catch for a good photo, Cardinals, Grebes, the Kildeer and Pilated Woodpecker nest you've seen, bunch of Egrets, several Tricolored Herons from about fifteen feet away, some racoons, and an unidentified toad. More to come.

It's a grackle of sorts, but whether it's a boat tailed or common grackle I can't tell for sufrom that angle. Boat tailed is my guess though.

At first glance I assumed this was a Red Tailed hawk, but as I got closer, I noticed that the belly was pretty solid, no "belly band" on it. My next thought was a juvenile bald eagle since there is/was a nesting pair a few hundred yards up the valley. After zooming in on the pic in the computer, I'm thinking it's a Coopers Hawk...

I know this pic sucks, but can you give me a positive ID from it?

wrong , wrong and... wrong :)

Hawks in flight are my forte! This is a juvenile northern harrier.

look at the wing structure, the uniformly colored body, the darker head(with the facial mask) , the tail and those longish legs. Harriers are grassland hunting raptors who hunt mice mostly. They flying low over the field and when they see a mouse they drop down on it.

I can google it for you :)

Can't figure it out though! MAYBE it's a marine toad? they are BIG , if not then HMMMM

With time you can only get better!

I must say that it is extremely heart warming to me to see that people are interested in the nature around them.

Very much so, oh Great Bowhay. :D :D That will be my main stay on my photography once I can get going real good. Matter of fact, I just put National Geographic Book of Birds of North America on my Christmas list. Hope that is a good one to get.

On that note, here is one I took earlier this year at the Salato Wildlife Refuge.

Nat Geo is a good book indeed. I would say every person who enjoys birds NEEDS a Sibley guide too!

That is one strange looking mallard there!

As I am sure you know, every year GGOW's migrate down to find food. Some years they MASS MIGRATE when the winters get harsh or food levels drindle.
