I am curious about the lens listed. They say it was a 1000mm f 8. I know the Nikon 500mm reflex if an f 8, and they make a 500mm reflex f 5. I also know that Nikon makes a reflex 1000mm f 11.
So, is this a typo, is this a lens I haven't heard of, or did he use a 2X teleconverter and they didn't list that, just the equivalent focal length?

Ah, mooning us again, I see.
The moon has looked enormous lately and I've been thinking about taking a few shots. Forgive my stronomical ignorance, but is that really brightstar I've been seeing near the moon about 10:00 the North Star?. I don't remmber ever seeing a star look so big.

WHY can't it be a 500f4 w/ 2x tc ;)
OR BETTER YET..... SIGMA 1000F8 APO in NIKON mount :)
Jacqui 10-20-2005, 07:57 PM Lava, I haven't been looking at the night sky too much but I *DO* know that Mars has been really big lately and it travels near the moon. Is the star that you're seeing looking a little red? If so, it's probably Mars.

Is the bright star you see rising in the east around 9:00 pm. It is approaching Earth for conjunction (happens every 22 months) and will make it's closest approach on 29 October. Weather permitting, I'm going to try to get some shots of it.
It may have a yellowish color, especially early when it first comes up. When it gets overhead, it may take on more of a red hue. Weather plays a big factor in how it looks.
BTW, it is a common thing for people to think the brightest star in the sky is the North Star (Polaris). The North Star is actually a second magnitude star. The dimmest stars visible to the naked eye under dark skies are 6th magnitude. Right now, Mars is shining at magnitude -2.2. Venus is actually the brightest object in the sky at magnitude -4.2.

You are right - Mars has been near the moon the last few nights.
BTW, Venus is the bright star in the west when the sun goes down.

Of course it could have been a 500mm f4 with a 2X tc!
And I forgot about the Sigma 1000mm f8!
