Your camera probably came with some sort of image editing software which will allow you to resize the images. If it's Adobe Photoshop, I can probably sort-of walk you through it (all the versions are slightly different).
If you don't have anything, try Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) which is a free download. With that, here's what you do:
Open the program, click File > Open, and open the image.
Image > Resize-Resample
Make sure "Preserve Aspect Ratio" is checked
Under "Set New Size", change the larger of the two numbers to 600, then click OK.
File > Save As (this is important, so it saves this smaller image as a copy - don't use just Save!) I usually save these to my desktop so they're easy to find. On the Save As window, make sure that it saves it again as a jpeg (at the bottom, might default to BMP).
Close Irfanview.
Here's how big an image will be if the longest dimension is 600 pixels, as above. If you stay at this size, the shot is big enough to be seen but won't go over the limit on this site or take too long for dialup users.

I'm using CS (not CS2 yet) and one easy way to get running with it is with Scott Kelby's books. They're written specifically for whatever version you have of Photoshop, so it's very step by step. A lot like a recipe book, actually. The downside of these books is that you don't really learn why you're doing something, or basic theory of how it works. I'm still looking for the best book for that but I think a class might be a bigger help for me.
