Some of us here are signed up for World Photo Day 2005 (http://worldphotoday2005.com/) which is on June 1st. From their website, "The goal of the project is simple: to show the world we live in through the eyes of photographers, worldwide, on one day in the year 2005. This is in no way a contest. It is merely a platform for all to enjoy and review with pleasure". I see that Photography Review is also helping with promotional support - so here's a little more!

They're looking for images of people in their everyday lives and I've got a couple of ideas for environmental portraits. If the weather is bad, I'll have to go to plan B, for example - can't do it a couple days when the sky is better, etc! Part of the challenge is that you only get to submit one image, but you will retain the copyright to your work.

Note that the "Day" runs from midnight to midnight GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). You can check your local time against GMT here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time/timemain.php). I'm in the Central Time Zone so I guess that means that (since GMT is five hours ahead due to daylight savings time) I have from 7:00pm on the 5/31 until 6:59pm on 6/1. He's relying on honesty to make sure that people comply with this. If you're shooting digital he could check the EXIF data (hint: make sure your camera's date and time is set correctly) but I doubt he'll have time to do that. So let's keep it how he wants it, and work with the conditions you get - another part of the challenge! You can shoot film but will still have to send the shot in within 24 hours of the end of the day.

I'm signed up and know of a couple of others from two other past discussions we've had on the site. The day after the event, I'll start another "sticky" where we can all post the one shot we submitted - I'm excited to see what everyone comes up with. So who all is giving it a shot?

As you mentioned, a couple of people have signed up; that includes me.

Now I just have to REMEMBER on that day. It's going to be quite a busy one for me ... driving to Chicago to pick up the MIL for a week's visit, then racing home for dress rehearsal for the musical I'm in (which is after 6:59 pm, I'm glad you mentioned that). Although I could get shots of the dress rehearsal the night before.

I'm expecting to have a tough decision on which shot to submit. I love the idea of submitting "people in a community play" as well as "picking someone up from the airport". I suppose it will depend on which event produces the better shot. :-)

Kelly, I think you'll have great opportunities especially at the rehersal. If you've never shot in a situation like that you might want to try it in advance to get a feel for it. Stage lighting can quickly blow out highlights because the lighting is very bright and from overhead. I hope you have a hard time choosing, that will mean you have a lot of great shots!

I'm registered, and I'll be at school that day, so probably something along that lines.

I, too, have just signed up! My only thought would be that it would have been better on a weekend simply for the variety of activities available on a beautiful summer weekend. Of course, I guess in some parts of the world, I'd have to say a beautiful "winter" weekend! haha...Good luck everyone on getting just the right shot!!!

There's still time!

I just got an email from them saying that, while you do need to register with the site, you'll also need to register here (http://www.photogroup1.com/index.php). Should be fun and I have no idea what to do. Depends on the weather, I guess.

Well, so far I'm remembering!

I've charged my batteries. I'm about to clear my 1GB card. And I'm going to take my camera with me tonight, to chronicle Rehearsal starting at 7:30 pm CST, which is within the correct hours of the GMT day.

Wish me (and the rest of ya's) luck in getting the best shots possible! :)

I signed up. Now, where to look for what.......that is the question. I'm trying to figure out what might be happening in Paterson tomorrow that might win a photo contest.

I just wanted to say Hi to you all and let you know I signed up for this worthy event months ago. Drew's original plan of emailing images changed to gallery and it is great that even on June 1st people can still sign up and upload their images to www.worldphotoday.com Weather not so good today on the Isle of Wight UK but perhaps I will get an image tonight at our iwdig meeting. :)

Welcome, Angelise. You've still got plenty of time left!:) I haven't done anything yet myself and am stuck at work all day. That leaves the possibility of about two hours to do something. Pressure? Nah...

Take shots at work! At the gas station! At the grocery store! ANYWHERE you are!

Off i went to work yesterday with my camera bag, annoyed with the weather but knowing it could be worse (showers from time to time and permanently grey sky). After work, there i am in the middle of town, wandering looking for my shot. Now I had a very clear picture in mind, THE picture i wanted for once, so i went to my spot to let the scenario unfold and waited for the shot to materialise, and did it ever? no is the answer to that one. An hour later, feeling slightly dejected, I roamed the streets of Dublin, looking for my B scenario which i also had in mind, but no luck, so in between the drops of rain i am now shooting everything and nothing. I find a nice shot but the woman sees me and runs for cover, and no amount of coaxing could get her back to her spot.
During all this time, I find myself noticing how self conscious i am (carrying a big camera around my neck and looking at people through a big telephoto lens), and how weird (for lack of a better word) it makes me feel pointing my camera at people i don't know. Very disturbing. But that's another debate.
All in all, i must have taken about 40 pictures thinking to myself there might be potential for about 5 of those. I decide to call it an afternoon and start heading home when suddenly a group of friends appears out of nowhere, and entice me into a warm and cosy Pub where they force me to sit down and place in front of me this magical black drink they call Guinness. Now i'd heard rumors about this drink before, but never knew it was a time machine, as the next time i looked at my watch, it was one o'clock in the morning and this cinderella had missed her midnight appointment.
Sorry world photo day, Sorry Drew Rossman, this is one day in the life of Dublin that got away from me. :D :( :p :D

Regards

Chris

Surely you have *something* to post.

Have you looked at what's there? I'm finding that even just a picture of a woman and her granddaughter is enjoyable to look at, when they're in Manila. Why? Because of the bag of rice in the foreground.

Pick a shot that shows something very ordinary and everyday. It's not a photo contest, it's a photo experience. I want to know what YOUR day was like, running around Dublin shooting pictures. I don't want to see a fantastic picture. I just want to see a slice of your life.

Hi Kelly, fair enough, that can be achieved but all the shots are still in my camera so i can't upload any today. On top of that, i usually upload from work as we have broadband here, but my contract with them ends today, and at home my PC is VERY antiquated (1998) and we only have a 56K line. Furthermore, I'm off to the Connemara tonight so i won't be back till sunday night.
All this to say, i would happily post one (even if quite uninteresting) but it might not be for a while.

Regards

Chris

PS:BTW i love your shot of the man with his wheelbarrow in fiddler on the roof. Nicely done
